no, 260 didn't come with a lid.
later 260s might have had one, but we call them 280s.

Anyone ever fitted one to a car that didn't come with one?

Other than buying an armrest/lid what else is required?
I've got a leather one (I think) that I've removed from my 240z cause it was horrible and a pain in the arse if you're interested.upload_2020-6-9_19-41-8.jpegupload_2020-6-9_19-41-47.jpeg

Late 260 s had a lid but as i said earlier 260s didn’t as the centre consul is same as a 240 and they share a lot of 240 bits and late 260s ain’t a 280z totally different car to drive and better than a 240 260 due to wots under the bonnet,a lot of the yanks put the thicker arm rests on as replacements as pictured by Pete and they are truly horrible,I’ve seen loads in the states and they just don’t look right

Sounds like a previous owner might’ve upgraded it having liked the late consul better but I’m pretty sure the earlier ones were same as 240 which I’ve had 2 of in the past I’ve also noticed on some Zeds that they have original radios but are slightly different there are lots of small variants another one of which is the indicators being put on the underneath of the bumper which I think look better ,all those little things make em a bit unique in their own way which shuts up the anoraks who think they know everything, only one person has pointed out something on my 260 that’s different in all the years I’ve had it

Did it come with it from new or has it been added since?

Well it could have been swapped by a PO I suppose. Hadn’t considered someone would be that bothered about a full console swap for the sake of the lid, unless there was another reason.

Thinking about it, it has some odd wiring and evidence of burnt cables so there may have a been a ‘need’ for a swap.

My 1972 240z has a back hinged arm rest, in good condition and is comfortable. I think they were dealer options for sure.

The size looks standard with no particular design features, is it possible that the same or similar arm rest is readily available from another car / manufacturer?

My 1979 260Z has a side opening lid which looks to be exactly the same part as both my 280Z ('77 and '78) but set up to hinge on the opposite side.
The lids and consoles are interchangeable but I can't remember if the hinges, blanking pieces and latch are.

The hinges are suppose to be interchangeable as are the latch and blanking plates and is correct for the more desirable late 260 Z and the 280Z is the same it’s just that some of the yanks like the more padded arm rests as they are more comfortable that’s why you would see them on the us cars if you went over there ,they come up on USA Ebay quite often, think you can still get new ones on there but they are aftermarket efforts I think and look pants but they do the job

hinges on the right probably?

If I remember correctly, the only part that was 'sided' and couldn't be swapped over, was the catch on the tray (circled below).
I think the upper hook could be moved to the other end of the shaft and you can just about see that there is a hole for it.
