Buying a 240/260Z

Hi there

I've started my research to buy a 240 og 260Z. Preferably I would like a 260Z 2+2, as my son could ride with us too, but they seem hard to find.

I need to find a car in very good shape. Does not have to be showroom/mint, but it should be instantly driveable, rust free with no big things to be done. The price would of course be higher than a medium or project car, which I'm fully aware of.

I've been looking in this forum and on different car sites for some months, but I have a hard time to put a value on the car I'm looking for.

How would you experts value a car, that is original (no upgraded engine or other 'to-look-more-modern' upgrades), in very good condition (the step below showroom/mint) and with original engine, gearbox and matching numbers?

I tend to see the prices are a bit higher for 240Z than for 260Z, am I right? And how is the 2+2 compared to that? Guess we'll see increasing prices for the 260Z as well in a couple of years, if it follows the 'trend' from e.g. Porsche 911 valuation.

Best,
Kenneth

It might be a good Idea to ask Sean Dezart as he is in France and would have a better knowledge of the availability and costings of Zs in Europe

I would like both valuations in UK, Europe and US. I've imported from the US before and would do it again, if the right car (and especially the right and honest seller) shows up :)

You obviously want a LHD car (not an Aussie import you div Status).

If you want a 2+2 (260Z or 280Z) then go for it - there are plenty in Europe and they cost less than the 2 seaters.

E.g. 240Z in condition 2 (just below showroom): £23.000
260Z in same condition: £21.000
260Z 2+2 in same condition: £19.500

But I'm just guessing as the prices seem to jump very much up and down with no trend.

Anything is possible.

Prices +/- within France (which is obviously an open market to neighbouring countries hence why some cars sell quickly as their domestic prices are higher than ours) :

Thanks a lot!. I'm not looking for 280, but I'll have to me patient to get a 260 2+2 in very good AND original condition. I'll follow the section in this forum with ads.

If you should stumple upon something, feel free to drop me a message :) I'm not good at French and only import if I can get the car inspected before pick-up (which I didn't do in the US earlier on...)

Btw - how do you edit/enter a signature?

Best,
Kenneth

You want original carbs a 4spd gearbox and everything from a USA import ?

Speak to ERCLassics in Holland - they are honest and have found two Zs upon demand for members here, sending many photos before the car was shipped.

There is this one on sale elsewhere which looks nice :

Later 2+2s like mine already have the mounting positions in place, and aftermarket seatbelts are availiable through companies like Securion etc.

Okay, how late should they be (note I'm only looking for 260)?
Do the earlier versions have mounting positions as well, or should I prepare for some additional welding?

I'm much into originality, sorry :( But upgraded carbs or a 5 speed gearbox could be nice additions. Guess it all comes down to the rest of the car.

I know ER in Holland. Had some conversations with them before I bought my previous Porsche, but nice to hear that they are actually also trustworthy (we didn't go that far in conversations).

Post '76 I suppose but most Z models were engineered the same so you'd probably find the same mounting holes on earlier cars.

Thanks. The gold one you linked to, is that a late '74 with the blinks above the bumpers?

I think I'll have to get myself a book like this: Datsun 240Z & 260Z Road Test Portfolio
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Datsun-240Z...8097&sr=8-1&keywords=datsun+240z+buyers+guide

Just to get to know the different model years etc.

Did the 260Z come with a 5 speed gearbox outside the US at all? Wikipedia isn't much help at this point.

If you have any good websites explaining the different model years and US/EU/World differencies, I'll also appreciate this :)

Then I'll use the winter to gain some knowledge :)

The 74.5 model were in Denmark (for some reason I don't know) fined with additional 50% in registration fee upon the normal registration fee in Denmark (which is around 100%.....), so that model would be very expensive for me to register in Denmark.

From 1975 the 50% 'fine' were removed again.
