Now i understand why people are bothering to butcher a used one, NLA new, at least not one you'd want and decent replacements are rather heavy on the coin side!

.... bothering to butcher a used one!

Ahem - I think the word you were looking for was re-engineer ;)

You are right the best ones are eye watering for the pocket - but so is my critical injury / life insurance ;) . There are many using the MSA SFI damper without issue on stock engines - so I can't imagine the quality is a big issue with those on stock street driven engines. The internet would be full of chat otherwise.

Surely they have to be better than the 40 year old items on most stock engines? For me and the way I whip the horses on every possible occasion and with a modified engine, I felt the need to cry a little at the outset and spend on an ATI as insurance.

From what I researched, it transpires that one of the first signs of a damper going bad is excessive engine vibration. Like I said I was shocked to find how loose mine was on the old engine. This can eventually lead to main bearing damage and potentially a damaged crank.

Check that with the fan belt off you are not able to move the outer ring either way. But that is a highly unscientific test. Or just spend the £200 on the MSA SFI damper if you feel nervous about your old one and given that you are not driving her like a hooligan (except for when tying to keep up with me)! :p

Well looking at both my old one and our new old stock twin one ,now cut down , they look very similar , just a slightly wider pulley , 12 mm , original one was 10 mm .
I am only running a near standard engine and dont drive it hard if honest , so will have to see how it stands up when the engine is up and running .
