Black and White Number Plates

I see black and white/silver plates on modern cars all the time!

Usually on black Range Rovers, usually a private plate and more often than not in the wrong font..... more money than sense idiots!

Im all for black and white/silver plates on classic cars, but they look down right stupid on anything modern,
seems to be a god given right for the 'considerably richer than thou' club to have illegal plates.

Every time i see one of these twats on the road, i find myself wishing for an unfortunate accident to occur,
or the urge to spray paint the number plate in dayglo orange.... maybe then the rozzers might actually do something about it :(

Rant over :)

Out of Interest I thought I'd see how much a set would cost to buy. The first site I visited specifically states that they are for pre 1975 cars. I'll be ordering a set :driving:

Yes, I discussed this with them and 'opened their eyes' to it. I wanted to see if they had any more info but in fact they didn't have any at all.

.............As an aside to this, number plate manufacturers are 'in the dark' too however one manufacturer said that he would think fitting them on a 240Z was not a big problem anyway and doubted if anyone would question it....................

so can we mix them up then? White on black at the rear & black on white at the front? Just a thought :D Might make for a good combo on my white Z :D

In short, no you cant. Also be careful of many of the suppliers ... the standard size square rear plate (12x8) does not fit suitably on a 240. See another recent thread on this subject

You need 'em wider on a 240Z - like on the French site - 320mm, otherwise you see the gaps behind....and I thought that 215mm is too high needing trimming down.

I used a bike rear plate with car size figures on my 260Z. Still not a good fit, gaps at the sides, but tbh I was just in such an excited rush to get my car out onto the road that I really didn't care that much about it at the time. Figured I'd sort it out over the winter :)

IMO the american size 12" x 6" is pretty much perfect with regard to fit. It doesn't leave any gaps a has just the right amount of space above it to look like it was designed that way. I think the american and Jap plates are the same size so its no mystery why it fits just right. I was not happy with the letter sizeing on the first set I ordered so I've ordered another set from a place in France. They are pressed ali in black with silver letters and no silver border. The letters are 80mm high so I'm guessing they will be the narrower american style to fit it all on one line.

John the letter sizing and style are different for B/W and Reflective. See Gov doc INF104

I am not going to get too anal about complying with the letter of the law. As long as its pretty near and not taking the ****, like the one on the front of the blue car, then I very much dought I will get pulled on it.

Top one , nearest the keyboard. A nice mix between classic look and almost '70s letters etc - very apt !

The one at the top will probably go on the front with the black pressed ali and no border on the back. The lettering height (80mm) is the same on both but US proportions for the rear plate so not legal. I have 2 of the borderless ones so may use it front and back. It is the perfect size for the rear. Now I just need to get another 6 sets done for the other cars.

Johny could you post a pic of that all black plate when you've fitted it onto the rear of the car please. If it's a great fit on a Z I think I may use that size/shape plate on mine, and as my car has a 6 figure reg not 7 as in your pic I think I'd be able to use regular size figures. Cheers :driving:

The top one and the all black one aren't compliant AFAIK..the spacing between the letters is not per DVLA guidance..the M reg plate refers..

I would still install them and worry about my defence in case old bill pulls me over.
