Ah well, after several years as a web member and now, finally, a club member, can I throw No 77 into the mix?
I now own FFA196A, built for Spike and bearing a cylinder head modified by him personally.
Not yet sign written, it will bear very similar writing to FFA196L which, in 1975, Spike sold and my late father, Malcolm Douglas, used for over a year as his company car!! It was great getting a lift to school I can tell you!
FFA196A has been built to a very similar spec as 196L in the late 70's early 80's. 240 ish BHP plus all the Sam mods to drivetrain, suspension etc.
The debate re original or tribute may run forever but for me, Spike had this car built for himself to his spec with his own head and that's good enough.
Hope to get to Donington in May '15 and look forward to further 'discussion'.

Well done Al for following the childhood memories and creating what looks like a stunning example. I bet you are chuffed and at the end of the day, that's all that matters. Look forward to more information and pictures.

So where is number 76?

Lovely cars but this is all getting a bit too much for my old brain to take in. I'm going to search for a FFA196 'something' Reg. and spray my car 110 red and bronze ;).

Al well done for joining the Club and bringing another lovely Z into the 'fold'.

Although out of date now as Rob Crofton owns '75' and Al has '77', Win still has the one in between

Obviously the DVLA had run out of FFA plates... ;)

Not painted in France by poles, painted by a very talented Martin Ryland who has restored a stack of 240z to a superb standard. Hats off to the guy. He did OGS over 3 years ago, and through all sorts of weather and lots of miles the paint is still superb. In the 70's it would be covered in spider rust by now.

Have to agree with you there sir.
My car a testament to his work.

Martin has done the last three "new gen" Samuri's. (No 74, 75,76)
He's just finished another blue/silver genuine Samuri to a very high standard to a client in Calais.

He's got two more genuine Samuri's on his books and I think there going to be pretty special.

Similar to Rob Gaskin, I am having trouble getting my head around this, particularly since it's mentioned that new Samuri are being created by a Mr Ryland and there is a "new generation" of Samuri in numbers 745 75 and 76 ........

There might be a range of opinions of what is a Samuri car. I guess the most relevant opinion is that of a court of law. It is my understanding that Samuri was and is(?) a legal brand name of a company called Samuri Conversions Ltd. A Samuri is a car that was/is modified by Samuri Conversions (or has the legal aiuthorisation to use the brand name). All other cars are replicas, copies or tributes. For cars modified pre 1994 (the S Anderson era) there is little to debate. However, all cars modified post 1993 by the resurrected Samuri Conversions is also a Samuri no matter what those modifications might be. However, the Samuri "community" may accept or look down on these post 1994 cars (does anyone know what was converted by the company post 1994?).This brings to mind the MG Metro which was so branded to sell a few more units. Legally they are true MG's but not really well regarded as they were not in the spirit of MG.

As the Samuri name is a brand name, I guess the acid test is when an owner presents a car to the wide world as a Samuri, particularly if the car is put up for sale as a Samuri. I can see trade description issues possibly being raised. There seem to be gaps in our knowledge. Does Samuri Convertions still own the brand name? If so, is the brand owner going to protect the companys legal rights or has permission to use the brand name by others been secured (or bought) ?

I have no particular interest in Samuri but find this discussion interesting. Others might bring forward information to help clarify our understanding of Z history and put right my understanding.

Trade descriptions being raised,............... highly doubtful.

Anything engine these days in the uk with triples on seems to be advertised as a 240z with a 'samuri engine' or a sump bolt that was actually off Big Sam.
Similar settings are with the 240's in other countries, advertised as 240ZG's ,when they're nothing more than a standard car with a aftermarket frp nose stuck on.

The Samuri story has a fair few grey areas and seems very comfortable sat in it's own controversy over the years.
It's almost part of it's charm......

I agree re trades descriptions, highly unlikely, and if you look at my gallery in my profile you'll see that no77 is registered as a 'Datsun 240Z Samuri'. Hmmm. Enjoying the discussion! (this is fun!)

The charm and mystery continues!!!

As the Samuri name is a brand name,

Not sure that 'Samuri' is a brand name. It isn't of course a real word (samuri being the correct in the context of japanese warrior). Can't find any reference to the term being registered and so probably open to general commercial use
