3.1 engine done now...

Hey bud some people may not have liked the look of a sam but each to their own as you say

I no longer have a Sam & would not have another for various reasons, what is a Sam (everyone who see's any 240 260 asks if it is a Samuri) the only thing visually wrong with my present Z is the colour (red). I personally do not like any mods to the original 240 bodywork with the exception of the right choice of front air dam & maybe in some cases flaired arches.

I think Ian's Z is a master piece apart from 2 things, that is the rear lights & the all in one bumper air dam thingie (feel both of these really would affect the value of the car) & they certainly affect the looks of it in my opinion, change those it would probably be one of the most desirable & best looking Z's in the country.

Sure most would agree with that, they are just too scared to admit it ;).

I would have to agree I thought the same thing when I first looked at the photo's a while back, The rear lights are just nasty lol.

Somehow the rear end just looks a little bare to me personally and the lights look a bit like you've run out of idea's and popped in to your nearest halfords and picked up a set of trailer lights :lol:.

I love the front though if that helps :D

Very constructive comment Gwyn to your fellow Z Club Member who has completed their car after 17 years off the road!! Well done!

So, we're only 'allowed' to say nice things about anybody and anything ? Great forum !

Ian loves it - wonderful - it's his car made to his taste.

Me , I don't like the front spoiler - it's too 'heavy', I don't like any wheels with bare hubs, I don't like the rear at all - it's no longer a Z - looks like some US cars one sees on ebay and I don't like the Classic Z Register sticker on the windscreen :D !

Still looking forward to seeing some photos of the car with other Zs and a video or two of it running :driving: please.

Sean, just making sure there is some love on the forum.

No, you don't have to like it at all, maybe nice though to acknowledge the hard work and the achievement of getting ones car on the road.

At the end of the day we all have a common interest in these cars and share a passion.

I am sure Ian would appreciate constructive comments.

Peace.

Peace off.

There is love, I just don't share the same passion as Ian and his rear end :D and I'm waiting to see how the car performs, not just looks with the 3.1 or is it 3.2 (see first ever thread title).

I have already acknowledged his hard work and persistence - this is the balanced observations :p.

Cheers Samuri-240 (and Sean). Regards the front...I did give the painter my first choice, but it was beyond his skills/time to fit it, so I needed something fast (and without front bumer fittings/indents). Not my ideal choice, but it is not too bad. Something to change later as I have what I want fitted stashed away. Will require some work.. And the rear lights...this is something I came up with 17yrs ago, and I still like. I intentionally left the framework for the OEM lights behind, so I can change it when I want. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it is trying something different, which is what car mods are all about. No one spotted the rear wing then?

As for value, just say it is valued a lot higher than I thought it would be.

Somehow the rear end just looks a little bare to me personally and the lights look a bit like you've run out of idea's and popped in to your nearest halfords and picked up a set of trailer lights

Quite the contary, took 3 months to get hold of the rear lights (originals). For me the point was to tidy up the rear. If you go bumperless, all you have showing are the pressed sections to accomadate the bumper and holes in the rear. The whole rear end is hand-made, and a credit to the maker..Aso, I wanted the car on the road, rather than sitting back in the paint shop again..

I don't like any wheels with bare hubs

The price of having the wheels I have. I could have some hubcaps made, but seeing some original hub-caps on my other Kobe Seiko wheels, they just look naf.

3.2 Sean. Basically the same set-up as Sylvians.

You will have to have a look in the flesh, converted a couple of people who have seen it.

Ta for the comments, either way.

Cheers
Ian

Sorry Ian it was meant very tongue in cheek :p.

That's it - the rear is a 17 year old whim - knew I seen it before - luckily it's only a 260 or the value lost would be greater.

What about the rear wing ? Just noted that the boot doesn't fit properly and still think that if a Z has no rear bumper, it has no business loading up the front - looks unbalanced....and too high on it's wheels too.

Nice colour though - aubergene ?

Are you driving it ?

I know Rob, but I knew Sean would be along;)

No you have not. Car never been on the road with this.

I would answer your other points, but you are just being your normal picky self as you do with every other z (as if your point/z is gospel:conf2:)..as I have said before, things to go/up-grades coming. It is not finished.

Is it insured and on the road now then Ian? If so, what's the scoop? Is it riding nicely, responsive off the throttle etc...

Not your car silly - the whim is 17 yrs old and I've already seen that whim on OTHER cars before.

You're so straight - the Ernie Wise of Zs :smash: !

I don't understand - you've been meticulous and taken your time and (IMHO) have rushed it to get it on the road..........

....and we haven't heard yet how she drives, how did the rolling road session go - details of driving impressions please - we've all been following this thread and it's gone...........flop !:(

Sean, I don't know if you understand, but as time goes on upgrades/changes happen as the car gets fitted up/developed/ sometimes too late to change something without a big step back/more money becomes available, and there has to come a time when the line is drawn to just get the car done, as the development/tinkering is continuous. If I done what I wanted in one hit, the car could be another 3/4 yrs until it was ready. Plus this is the first car I have restored, it has been a learning experince too. There is also the financial side, building what I have has not been cheap, the wallet needs a break too! And I have another project to do.

Is it insured and on the road now then Ian? If so, what's the scoop? Is it riding nicely, responsive off the throttle etc...

Patience:cool: It has been a long time since I drove this z, let me savour it first:)

Well, some of you may what to know how the 260Z drives.

On its first decent drive (rather than round the block), just, just superb. Came back home, could not stop grinning and re-living the drive. My mate rang, and I had to stop talking to him, so I could go out again. Utterly, utterly made the right choice of engine, engine builder, performance parts and set-up. Even more pleasing as I did a fair amount of the work, and loads of research.

The engine, is just fantastic :) just pulls and pulls, no on cam, off cam sh1t, just loads of torque to use at any rpm.. It does not come in big waves that you notice, just one constant big wave whisking you along. This means you let the engine do the work rather than stirring the 'box or trying to keep in the power band. Just soo much torque to use. Hats off to Rebello for a lovely job of cam design (and engine). Will pull in 5th (rolling) from about 1800rpm without needing to change down or carbs spluttering. The Nissan Motorsports (US) aluminium flywheel is great, helping the engine rev up, and certainly great on de-celeration (sp). I hear the early 280zx gearbox has a bit of a gap between 2nd and 3rd, not that I notice, but having the torque to "over-come" this deals with that. Nice "whirrr" from the Kameari timing chain kit can be heard within the engine and exhaust noise.

Brakes are grand, having the 260z 2 by 2 servo and the 280zx master makes the brakes feel soo strong and give you loads of confidence. Handles nicely, even with fairly thin tyres. Having the urethane bushes and up-rated mounts makes the car feel tight.

Exhaust note...oh my:) Slighly annoying noise at low rpm, but that is the engine breather system which needs looking at/changing. But that disappears as the revs rise.

A few things to adjust sort out as time goes on, but the main thing is it is on the road, and eating the road!

Just tickled pink!

Sounds like you had a fantastic time Ian, Well done mate.

Your engine very much sounds like the sort of thing I'll be looking for when I have enough cash to think about upgrading mine.
