I did wonder if that was the case, my father bought the car when it was about 4 years old & that was what was in the car then.

Most UK cars had just a radio and where the equaliser is a cut out to put stuff in. A factory option would be a separate tape deck that would slot in that cut out. If that makes sense

Yes that makes sense, well it's been there that long I'm just going to leave it that way but I am going to have to change the speakers as they. Sound really bad.

I have a spare console with I believe the exact same set up. I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

I find it a bit of a coincidence that this one looks exactly the same as your one. I always thought it was some sort of optional extra as it looks original ish. Now that I see two of them pushes me more towards this idea. IMG-20210704-WA0003.jpg

It’s an after market kit by Clarion.
Standard fitment was never so flash

Base (UK had radio on other side)

Thanks Huw, I've checked out that website & I think I'm going to go down that route. Period looks & up to date sound & quality sounds good, I will let you know how I get on.
