280zx CV shaft repair?

Bit of a long shot but does anyone have any experience with working on the inner CV joint. In particular, the purpose of the CV boot metal section. After looking at a number of images on the net, I get the impression that it’s not just there to hold the boot on. If it is there to stop the spider coming out of the CV on a 280zx then is it still an issue when fitted to a 240z as its so compressed it physically cant come out.

The reason I ask is that I’m planning on using a universal type boot kit that doesn’t have the metal band that the OEM has. Now if I cut all the old boot and band off, do I risk the spider coming out?

Well after writing out a long reply last night and the site went down :cuss: then my right click button stopped working on the laptop I thought i'd try again at work

John I don't think that the metal crimped boot retainer is there for holding the tripod in when in use on the road, I do plenty of cv boots at work and some just have an internal c clip to keep the tripod at home when the shaft is not on the car as you say it can't escape anyway when fitted, if you were rely keen you could have a groove machined on the inside and fit a c clip and then just use a universal boot or even better maybe just cut the old boot off bring them to me and we could see if a stretchy boot would fit (I have the tool) here's an interesting link and to show others what you mean

Enjoy

I looked at that link Terry. It's the fact that he was going to use the universal type boot but in the end thought better of it and went for the genuine type, that got me thinking.

I have the boots on order from Mike so I'll wait untill they arrive. I think they are a rubber boot and an inner and outer band to hold them on.

Just to elaborate a little more on what I am actually trying to do. I have a pair of brand new nissan driveshafts but they are for an auto. This meams the inner spline that goes in the diff is smaller. So' I plan to use the inner spline/CV caseing from my 2 broken driveshafts and the rest will be the new shaft.
