280zx alternator required

I guess that would come down to condition of wiring and ignition switch.
My car was built in 77 reg 78 and has a genuine 54,000 mile so might stand a chance.
I guess its always an option.

The thing i would worry about is that there might be voltage drop from the switched +12v which might cause the alternator to overcharge the battery.

Hi
Finally put the alternator in today, had a sheared nut on the mounting bracket so took a bit longer than I thought. But all worth it as now voltmeter is steady with no variance in voltage. Charging at 14.6v at 1500 revs, and 14.4v with headlights on etc at 1500revs a big improvement.
Ian you were spot on with the pinouts 2-3 and 5-1 diode strip to pin 5, car shuts off fine etc.
Again many thanks
Andrew

Contacted Superstart today looking for a new alternator to replace my Hitachi LR160-82 from a 280zx. Apparently they can no longer supply new alternators for the 280zx but did offer a rebuild service if I sent my old alternator to them. The person I spoke to quoted an approximate price at £110 + I will have to pay approx. £15 to send my old unit. Anyone know where I can get a new unit in the UK ? doesn't have to be Hitachi.

I would have thought the one I got from them would have been ok, for your car or is that no longer supplied?

I read this thread and thought the same as you Andrew. I phoned, and to be honest the bloke wasn't terribly helpful. I said I would prefer a new alternator but all he would offer was a rebuild service on my old one. I've looked elsewhere and found a new "blueprint" one for £90 odd.

I got one from http://www.alternatorsnstarters.co.uk/ for £86 +vat last November. It's not Hitachi but seemed to work fine.

Thanks Huw I've sent them a request for a price.

I,ve taken mine to bits and it doesn't look too difficult to rebuild ..... if I can get the bits (new brushes, rectifier bridge and regulator) I may just rebuild it and keep it as a spare.
Plenty of Hitachi LR160-28 alternators for sale in the US but I'm fed up waiting for months for parts to arrive, paying huge postage costs and then having to pay Vat on the total cost.

Thats really disapointing as the guys there were really helpful to me, and the alternator has worked faultlessly since installed.
I would have thought any internally regulated alternator should work, as long as it can physically fit correctly!!
