Hello All

Newbie here! I am restoring a Datsun 280zx 2+2 ‘79.

All pointers would be appreciated.
It was rusty in a few areas, I’ve now had it dipped and it’s currently at the fabricators. I am looking for parts for it. Managed to locate 2 front wings for it. Just need a clean front scuttle that has preferably already been taken off.

I also need both rear quarters. Now these parts are the ones causing me trouble. I have located these but they are in the US and this is where I’m getting stuck. I have no idea how to get them shipped over. The parts weigh 200kg and the vendor is not at all keen to get them sent here to the UK. Any advice is appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to the club. You should start a thread with pics on here, would be great to see another 280zx saved.

I am guessing you have tried zcarsource.com, they have a left and a right rear quarter.

You could also try 'Nissan 280zx Parts NZ' on Facebook. It will be mostly second hand parts, but worth a look. You need to join the group first.

Also check out www.thezstore.com in the US

You are going to find it tricky to track down body panels, so if you see something you need, best try and talk them into shipping it. You won't really find any new panels here in the UK at all.

Thanks Pete

I have replied to your PM.

Will join all groups I can but sadly most parts are in the US and it’s turning out to be a nightmare to ship to UK.

Another question all, what is the best way to restore? As close to original as possible or some modernisations? For instance the interior? Shall I retrim?

Choice is yours really. The interior in mine was originally blue with silver vinyl but time had taken it’s toll and most of the vinyl panels has peeled or gone an unpleasant yellowish colour. I chose to recover the damaged panels, mostly the boot panels in a light grey vinyl and used vinyl dye on the panels that had not peeled the same colour. The vinyl dye can be made up to any colour you want so I had some mixed to match the grey vinyl I’d used on the boot panels. I had carpets made to match the original blue, the dash and hard plastics I kept blue and dyed the bits that had faded. Seats I recovered using a kit from the Zstore and repaired the foam and frames. The seat cover kits are very good quality. For me this was cheaper than sending the whole lot off to be re-trimmed.
