280z transmission to propshaft seal issues

Hi

I am going through my 280z and sorting out all of the oil leaks.

I recently bought the seal that goes in the back of my gearbox where the yoke from the prop shaft slides into as there was a leak there. I bought the seal from z store in USA. I removed the prop shaft and replaced the seal however it still appears to be leaking.

Has anyone else had this issue. I can only assume that the seal is faulty or of poor quality. Does anyone have any idea of what to do or where to buy a better quality seal from?

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply and help.

I don't recall there being a problem with the yoke but I will have a look when I take it off again.

If there is an issue with the yoke is there anywhere in the UK I can buy a new one from or do I need to buy it from USA?

Thanks

I'd think you'd be able to get it repaired here if the yoke was worn.
How's your front diff mount? I have a vague recollection that mine may have leaked, but fitting the RT diff mount fixed it.

Sometimes the bore can get damaged when removing old seals. Hopefully not this but can be easily done if tool slips.

I have just taken off the heat sheild underneath the car and examined it again. I realise on close inspection that it's not the yoke seal leaking. It appears to be coming from where the gear shifter mechanism is.

There is a cylindrical shaped cast metal part that seems to have threads on it that connects to the most upper part of the gearbox and the shifter then goes into that. It is leaking from where this cylindrical part joins the gearbox.

Does anyone know what this part is and if there is a seal that goes there?

I have uploaded a picture

That casting is part of the gear selector mechanism and rotates side to side along the cylindrical axis when going from 2nd to 3rd gear for example.

There is 2 seals within the gear selector casting, the one that you see leaking is the larger of the 2 seals.
The issue is to change those seals you need to remove the rear casting of the gearbox and remove the striker rod from the gear selector rod. This is done by tapping out the cotter pin holding the striker arm to the rod, so the selector casting can be removed and the seals replaced. The issue is removing the cotter pin as it's extremely tight within the gearbox casting and so most people just leave that seal set, keep it clean and keep an eye on the oil level as it's normal only a weap.

Below is a picture of the selector casting with the outer seal in place your referring as well as the selector rod, striker arm and cotter pin

Hope this helps
