Wow £££. Don't you dare plead poverty again.😉

I think Ian has every right to plead poverty!!

I live in near poverty because all my money goes to this thing. First world problems.

Because I was changing a few things I will need to remap the ECU, so it makes sense to do all changes at once. I took advantage of great exchange rates from Japan with it being about 40% cheaper than 5 years ago.

I'm missing the RB rush
Me too, been too long since I drove this.

Building up my intake manifold. Liquid gasket on the bottom part.

Nismo Plenum test fit

IMG_E7858.JPG

IMG_E7864.JPG

I can't fit it permanently yet, for one, I've not sorted the coating yet, and secondly, I am not sure it will fit yet, it could cause issues with the clutch master cylinder, so I will have to drop the engine in for a test fit before final bolting down.

IMG_E7861.JPG

New o-rings for the top side.

IMG_E7877.JPG

I wanted the balance tube to be done in satin black Cerakote.

These are the spacer/washers for exhaust manifold installation, even though they won't be seen I didn't want to leave them rusty

IMG_7823.JPG

So I stuck them in the blast cabinet and they got a coat of Cerakote.

thumbnail_IMG_8026.jpg

I even decided to cerakote all of the hose clips, I semi regret this as it was a lot of fiddly work.

By the looks of it, it already is ?!

Attention to the detail is for me, always a good way to go, can be a faff/time/money, but it does look better.

Keep up the good work.
It's a good way to go if that is in your 'make-up'. I wouldn't have had half the fun in my Datsuns if I was like that.

We are all different.

Ian I don't think I've met you but do you drive a Datsun? I know you were building one and also that classic Sylvia?
EDIT - IAN PATMORE.

I can't help it, if I didn't do these things it would annoy me seeing them. Attention to detail is a big reason I am good at my job.

I haven't driven a Datsun in about 5 years, which hurts, but I will drive a Datsun again once this is back on the road.

My other non daily car is a 91 EF Civic

Its been doing a great job of keeping me amused in lieu of the Datsun

Although not as much as my cafe racer. I rally love getting out on this thing.

Heat shields are done. Cerakote on both sides, should massively limit the heat transfer. I went for silver inside as it should reflect more heat, but black for discrete looks outside.

Regarding the manifolds themselves - Thermo met want £900 to lag them ., there is no doubt its the best option for reducing the heat output though. Zirrcotec want £603 to coat them. That a lot of dough, so I am considering just cerakoting them. It will cut thermal transfer by at least 15%, but some reports have it showing as much as a 40% reduction in surface temperature, so it might be good as Zirctotec but a lot cheaper for me.

It turns out that while the main body of my HKS turbo elbows is stainless, the flanges are just steel. Never noticed before because they were coated by Zicrotec. But since that was removed when the Thermomet lagging was installed I noticed some rust starting. We can't have that.

IMG_7813.JPG

Almost forgot to clean the threads.

IMG_7814.JPG

So they got the cerakote treatment. I think they look piles better, but also has the benefit of extra radiant heat reduction.

thumbnail_IMG_8017.jpg

thumbnail_IMG_8018.jpg

To go the extra step for even more thermal barrier protection I also blasted and ceramic coated the insides.

thumbnail_IMG_8020.jpg
thumbnail_IMG_8019.jpg

Time to fit the Tomei oil pump.

thumbnail_IMG_7961.jpg

You can see how much oversize it is compared to the N1

thumbnail_IMG_7962.jpg

thumbnail_IMG_7960.jpg

Did have to drill out the reliefs for the dowels slightly.

thumbnail_IMG_7965.jpg
thumbnail_IMG_7966.jpg

Fitted with the aid of PRP alignment tool to ensure perfect alignment with the crank.

All fitted up with new timing belt really popping. I didn't realize how much the old one had faded.

thumbnail_IMG_7999.jpg

Now, I had already coated the cam gear cover bolts. But the new washers had the problem of the metal showing at the sides.

IMG_7870.JPG

Just didn't look right.

IMG_7868.JPG

So these got coated also.

thumbnail_IMG_7992.jpg

Well worth the effort.

thumbnail_IMG_8003.jpg

thumbnail_IMG_8001.jpg

Nismo manifold is now coated, now I don't think it looks as good as it did uncoated, but when you feel how smooth it feels coated it makes sense, the dirt won't be able to stick to it. In the end I used a custom mix of 80% matte, 20% gloss ceramic clear, because either on their own was either too glossy or too matte.

thumbnail_IMG_8045.jpg

That engine is rediculously bling. It should be mounted on a plinth in your house.

Starting to think its too nice to not have on display in my workshop.

The RB is looking fantastic.
Just out of interest, did you use new fasteners on what I assume are a new belt tensioner and idler.
They are often overlooked (cheap) parts that could lead to catastrophic damage if they fail due to having been over-torqued in the past.
I'm also guessing you know you have a couple of missing bolts on the inlet cam gear.

One thing I like about the RB26 is how good they can look, its like a piece of automotive art.

I did not change the fasteners, they don't have much mileage on them and then last place to build the engine was RB Motorsport, but now that you mention it, I'll get a set ordered.

All the bolts on that side are due to go for Zinc plating to they match the exhaust side.

When you’re an OAP and the excitement of the day is going to the supermarket, you’ll look back on this and be VERY pleased with yourself. It’s a thing of UTTER beauty. Like everything else you do fella. I’m forever in awe of the super high standard you and others in the club put on show for the rest of us to dream about / salivate over!

Sorry Ian, I meant Ian Patmore.
Yes, main focus is restoring the first generation Silvia (focusing on finding and restoring parts mainly), going to be a high standard, look standard but have sutble mods, some period, some not but will be inkeeping as best I can. Everything needs restored, including the glass...

Thanks.

I hope I'm a very long way off that being my only excitement in a week.

Its my dream build, and due to finances I doubt I'll ever be doing anything else like this, so I've got to build my dream as good as I am able to. I'm lucky that my job gives me several months a year to be able to spend on my projects. And its also good marketing for my side business so it needs to be as flawless as possible.

Hopefully my obsession pays off.

I was thinking more about the manifolds. This thing makes a ton of heat and anything I can do to reduce it is very beneficial, I'd love to go with the lagging, but I can't really justify an extra £900 right now, and because of nut and socket access it would need to be left thin in quite a few areas I am not sure I will go this route.

But I was thinking of doing one in Zircotec and one in Cerakote Glacier. Then I have the perfect test bed for it. What are the thoughts on this? I will be able to measure surface temperature differences and see how they perform.

Finished work on this for now, few more very minor details to sort out, but its mostly there:

This part is technically a downgrade, going back to OEM. The upgrade works good and means the clocking of the turbo does not need to be so precise, but I think it doesn't look as tidy, so back to the hardpipe.

thumbnail_IMG_8084.jpg

thumbnail_IMG_8967.jpg

I required a few hose clamps in this style, so I ordered some in black to save me doing them. Turns out that is a bad idea, the finish is terrible, so I ended up doing them myself anyway.

thumbnail_IMG_8881.jpg
thumbnail_IMG_8917.jpg

Worth doing all the clips in black, much stealthier look. And of course they won't rust out

thumbnail_IMG_8340.jpg

Still love my wiring harness, so neat and well labeled

thumbnail_IMG_8339.jpg

This is why we test fit:

Some modification required to fit with the new manifolds
thumbnail_IMG_8152.jpg
thumbnail_IMG_8153.jpg

Turbo side looks great:

thumbnail_IMG_8186.jpg

thumbnail_IMG_8471.jpg

thumbnail_IMG_8189.jpg

thumbnail_IMG_8908.jpg

Test fitting complete, missing the heatshields, but a lot of the manifolds are hidden anyway, so hopefully I won't miss seeing those Tomei manifolds too much.

thumbnail_IMG_8954.jpg

My new sump I drew up a few months ago is looking great and should be completed quite soon. I have stripped the turbo side down again for coating of the manifolds, once they are ready I'll build that side permanently with all gaskets and everything torqued to spec. The plenum side will stay loosely fitted until test fit confirmation in the bay.

WhatsApp_Image_2024-01-26_at_14.27.50_dd9938a2.jpg

Old sump was not bad, but this is a big upgrade in many areas and is now as good as you can make a wet sump.

WhatsApp_Image_2024-01-26_at_14.27.50_8e140236.jpg

So, this is as complete as it will get for now, save for a few minor details.

thumbnail_IMG_8344.jpg

Its such an impressive thing and has so much presence, I often find myself just staring at it and feeling amazed, its a true dream build for me. Many years ago I'd have been in awe of similar things with other peoples builds and hoping that one day I could do the same but thinking it may never happen.

Ian that is a work of art if I was sitting on that toilet I to would be admiring it but then I would think how much it has cost and wow my constipation has cleared 😂it truly is a thing of beauty for any petrol head 😎👍🤓
