Might not be the case with every non working 240z clock .But I had x3 non working clocks on the shelf
So decided to take them apart.
All of them simply needed the mechanism cleaning and lubricating.
Simply washed the mech with a good spray of brake cleaner now there all working once more
Worth a try if yours has stopped

They are quite simple mechanisms and its a shame they seem to be so often thrown away. The cleaning sounds good. You also need to apply clock oil to the obvious rotation points once cleaned if it is to continue to run. A precision pen oiler is good for this. They are not (and were never) particularly accurate. The hadbooks for early cars even state that 'the clock should be re-set on a daily basis'.

Didn't work on mine. I have the clock that has the date display (I think they call it the rally clock) fitted to the JDM models. Cleaned the mechanism and even took it to a clock specialist with no success. It has a printed circuit board with capacitors in it which may be the problem as they burn out. Going to get a friend who repairs tvs to test the continuity over winter. Not sure if it is the same on the 240z clocks.

Never seen the 'rally clock' version but then it is JDM. Found this https://www.zclocks.com/rally-clock-identification.html which might interest those who have.

Thanks for that - really interesting. It appears I have the 1 knob rally clock that was made by citizen for the 74-76 280z. I have been told the mechanicals are fine but the capacitor has burnt out so there is no power to drive the motor. It runs for about a minute then stops. My mate reckons he can fix the electrics which is good news.

Really easy fix with a soldering iron and some new caps or even replacing the BJT transistor. There was a superb write up on this on vizcar but has since disappeared :(
