at least the discussion was in the right place. I wonder if you could build the Sr20 engine from scratch from parts bin...

It's an S20 engine, and it is reportedly a complete 'short' engine, and has already been rebuilt by a specialist. It's not the original engine block for this car though, as the engine block number is too low (and the block is probably from a KPGC10 rather than a PS30). The car lost its original S20 engine many years back. Not a big problem, but it would theoretically reduce the value somewhat.

If you wanted to put together an S20 engine from scratch using used/new componentry, you'd struggle on a few parts. Kameari Engine Works in Saitama are now reproducing K4-style cylinder head castings, so that's less of a problem than it used to be, but all other major castings are no longer supplied by Nissan and you'd need to gather them one by one (engine block, cam cover, inlet manifold, oil filter mount casting, three timing cover castings, block water passage casting etc) and that's going to take time and considerable funds. You can go aftermarket with cams, valves, valve springs, retainers etc, timing parts/chains, crankshaft, rods, pistons, exhaust manifold, oil pan, water pump, flywheel and clutch and a few other bits and pieces. You're then looking for an original distributor, engine mounts (engine crossmember too if you want to fit one where an L20/L24/L26/L28 used to be), and a list of other ancillaries. Most of the 'service' parts - bearing/gaskets/filters etc - are available.
