Yep, unashamedly so. :D I just love noise, especially Z noise. I don't get enough scowls from the old folks of Abingdon. :devil: I want to be abl to make the car superbly loud within haf an hours graft for a 2 hour track spank and then back to normal for the next weekend blast around the lanes... I find the Z is simple to enjoy but I can make it suit me even better.

3 inch is too big, you will lose too much gas speed and performance will drop.......2.75 is enough for the wildest of cars (well all except out and out competition cars with big 3 litre + setups)

An optimum exhaust system is a selection of tubes selected by length and diameter to give the best overall effect right from the ports to the tail pipe for a given type of engine.

Too small a system and it will not allow enough volume or velocity of gas (required to optimise the scavenging effect and helping pull in the inbound charge, increasing the volumetric efficiency), to large a system and the same is true.....somewhere there is a sweet spot

Ultimately the system design will depend on the build of the engine and the task it was built for.

This is why its called a "system" (a collection of interacting components which function to produce something greater that the sum of its parts)

Does this apply to a turbo setup? If so, what would your advice be for the size of system I would need for my 1jz engine. I would be planning minor mods to start with and I would guess at no more than 450hp (eventually). I know this is a difficult question and won't hold you to it but I would like to hear from someone able to make an educated guess rather than just a guess. People have told me 3" but noone has quantified why.

No mate - I have an airfilter that could breath for a 747 and I want a drainpipe that can shoot out cooked rabbits and pidgeons - blow efficiency - I want a bigger exit pipe than my neighbours' scooby 'cos the bastard wakes me up every morning !

With turbo, it's a different kettle of fish, bigger the better - but don't forget ground clearance! 3" would be good as long as its mounted closely to the chassis or you'll be forever cursing ramps and speed bumps.

Why? With a turbo you want to help it spool quicker and therefore you need the least backpressure.

Having a SWB 300ZX it was difficult to get a new exhaust so had to go for the custom built option.

This guy made it for me.

Xtec Design - Home

Chose the boxes and pipes I wanted from various catalogues and he made it up. Had the car for the day. Cost £600 for the 2 pipes. All stainless cat back system. He has the equipment to bend and weld the stainless.

Don't know if this helps but my 280ZX Turbo has a 3" S/S pipe with one central box and it sounds gorgeous!

In multi storey car parks it hardly ever fails to set off some alarms (normally on German stuff).
