DVLA data shows total of 226 registered 240z of which 141 are SORN and 85 are taxed and presumably on the road. That’s all cars registered as 240z. The total has been increasing (imports!) for about 15 years suggesting the original UK survivors are more like 100-125 of which more than half SORN?

As I understand it the bulkhead back was fine, but clearly it needed a small nose job!

Ok... so we’ve finally found the VIN, in the right place on the bulkhead, reading the correct numbers and engraved in that same distinctive font! Phew! I’ve also heard from Andy Stanford about the repairs that were completed after the accident. So all appears to be good. As was surmised...

Thanks for the continued help! To answer your question of why I’m so bothered... I am hoping to find the original and correct VIN engraved in the bulkhead, and all indications are that I’m now about to do just that. There’s just so many layers of paint on the car that it’s invisible so I...

Thanks - yeah I have the (correct) detachable vin plate and the engine number (which is an L24, as it should be). Will get some paint stripper on the bulkhead tomorrow...

Exactly where on the bulkhead should the shell VIN be, please? I understand it to be somewhere near or above the brake servo but don’t want to strip too much paint yet... anyone post a picture of theirs? Thanks guys!

Hi all, and thanks for all the friendly advice and comments. Much appreciated! Sorry for my 24h absence, been a busy day! I’ve learned quite a bit in that time :-) I knew about the Andy Stanford part of its history including the - ahem - patina added over the years through an active racing...

Yep, over / under / inside - I haven't started pulling it apart yet so there's bound to be some good clues buried behind the dash or wherever, but they've been quite liberal with the paint gun! :)

New purchase, first Z, seeking history

Hi Rob. Thanks. Undecided yet... Depends if I like the original colour once I find out what it was! Car seems in fair shape but it does need a little TLC and I'm a little obsessive about my cars, I don't like doing half a job. So I'm considering biting the bullet and sorting the shell out...

Hi. I'm new here so please be gentle with me :) I have just bought my first 'Z, which I guess many of you will have seen was up at Silverstone Auctions recently. http://www.silverstoneauctions.com/datsun-240z-12918 It needs some work of course, but that was expected - I am very happy with...
