using an engine that has not been run for a long time

I am using a replacement 260z 'short' engine ( ie block and head) in my 240z for now as the original was blown when I bought the car. I have put the engine in the car, and run it, and it is not running right ( possibly overheating - see my earlier thread) although other than that it seems good...

how do you get those SU's running perfectly?

In theory, as you probably know, setting the balance screw should just be adjusting it so that the slack between the 2 carbs is just removed, so that when you open the throttle the carbs move from idle to fast idle at the same time. What is happening that makes you think that the balance screw...

    280zx gearbox - usable?

I bought an L28 engine and gearbox a little while back and the gearbox had been stored separate from the engine. The result is that the input shaft where it goes into the spigot bearing has rusted quite a bit. I have cleaned it up as much as possible, but there is are still some rust pits etc...

    '71 240z - that old melted fuse box question - with a small twist . . .

Welcome to the club Madeline I second zed2k about the headlight sub loom and the MSA replacement fusebox, although both are expensive, but cure a known weakspot and give some peace of mind Usually the melting fusebox is caused by corrosion in the contacts on the back of the fusebox. The...

    water boiling in block?

thanks for the advice guys. The thermostat is new and appears to be working OK, water pump is I believe the original 35 year old one!!! Radiator is newish but tested OK anyway. I'll keep on looking and hopefully it will be sorted in time for summer. Enjoy Japfest tomorrow: I will be there...

    water boiling in block?

If I had a bad air lock in the water system in my car would it cause the water to boil in the block, and would you be able to hear it? I have got this weird noise coming from the 260z engine in my 240z. The engine seems to get extremely hot very quickly when I start it from cold and so I think...

    vacuum testing 260z engine

Has anyone here used a vacuum tester to ascertain whether their engines are running OK? Mine is showing 16-17hg at idle but it has a rapid flicker of a bout 1 to 1.5hg which 'maybe' due to the cam overlap ( standard 260z engine) which I am trying to pin down thanks for any help Andrew

Dash indicator lights not working - any suggestions?

I am doing this on mine ( renewing/checking all bulbs before I refit the heater panel). There is a good bit of access but you have to do most of it 'blind', which is OK taking things out but not so easy putting them back, and in my experience the bulbs ( with their little tiny heads) can be a...

what does a dodgy water pump sound like?

My car has developed a strange noise from around the front of the car. I can only describe as a bit like what your lawnmower does when the grass chute blocks, a kind of choking sound. The engine itself seems to be runiing well so I wondered if it could be the water pump but I have no idea what...

    Eibach springs, which way up

if its anything like motorbikes it doesn't matter ( you can install progressive fork springs in either way round) logic being ( as Rob says) that the springs should perform the same regardless of which way round they are

    Stolen/Recovered Recording

I'd agree that it is placed by the insurance company, but if the police are involved they will inform the insurance company. I was under the impression that any theft/recovery was recorded, the argument being that that information may be of use to future buyers of the car and future insurers...

240z tripping out when I try to turn engine over

cheers Nick you got me looking in the right area, and I eventually found that the main battery cable was intermittently breaking contact. Put in one from my spares and its all sorted. Good to know that there are local people who can rebuild old starters etc. Cheers for that
