I'd be more concerned about taking an EV on a long journey. Especially if heavy snow was forecast.

Noted, but you're preaching to the converted. I'm a serial visitor to regional art galleries (Glasgow's Kelvin Hall is a gem, and I also want to revisit Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery) and when it comes to Manchester I've got a very soft spot* for Chicken Town.
*Hackney Marshes

Yes. Again I ask, why not? Will it spontaneously combust at the 20 mile mark? Will the pistons automatically ventilate the block as it goes past Watford Gap services?

I don't get it. What's stopping a KPGC10 from making the same journey as a BNR32 or a DR30?
"I don't get it. What's stopping a KPGC10 from making the same journey as a BNR32 or a DR30?"

Running a £120K car without a nice destination to go to.... yes driving to Le Mans but UK motorway bash. Bits are not easy to get if it does go pear shaped either, likely the same for DR30 less so for the BNR32

The very thing! JCC should have been given a knighthood ages ago.

Hear, hear.........

JCC would often open for the punk/new wave bands I used to see in Manchester in the late 70's and always received a great reception. I saw him in 1978 at the Factory PSV Club (very dodgy part of town in Hulme, owned by Tony Wilson/Alan Erasmus of Factory Records/Hacienda fame) at the Ritz on Whitworth St W and at Erics in Liverpool (wrong side of M62EXTRA:D). In 82/83 I saw him headline a small gig at Rafters on Oxford Road where I met/talked with Nico of Andy Warhol/Velvet Underground fame (unbelievable but true, she was JCC's partner at the time, they shared a proclivity for an illegal hard substance - allegedly).

Who can resist a poet/lyricist who says;
'I wanna be your vacuum cleaner, Breathing in your dust, I wanna be your Ford Cortina, I will never rust.'
Classic....

John Cooper Clarke, when I saw him at the Electric Ballroom in Camden (I think), looked about seven feet tall in his tight trousers. When I saw him a few years ago on the TV he looked about two feet shorter.

He’s not a big chap I saw him a few years ago and he certainly hasn’t put on weight…….still good to hear though.

so you would drive from London to manchester in it? I think not
Next month I'll be driving from Watford to Montrose and back in my 1968 Singer Chamois Sport with all of about 65bhp on tap from it's 928cc four-pot. 4 speed box with top gear running at a heady 15mph/1000 revs. :D

My Porsche 944 daily gets me to work every day without incident, although I do sit down in the weeds at traffic lights, hemmed in by these modern behemoths. Sat behind an X6 at some lights not too long ago. These hideously bulbous things block the sunlight like you wouldn’t believe … and the retina-melting rear brake lights (permanently on at junctions) were above my eyeline …

I have done many thousands of miles in an Imp mostly 875cc. Is your engine based on the later Sunbeam Talbot engine or just bored?

Same as an S30 then;)
You really notice the unnecessary and ridiculous size of modern cars, especially SUVs when you are in old car now.
Must be even worse in an Imp.

Story time again EXTRA:D
I used to bring classic Minis over from South Africa as container fillers. One time in Cheshire (land of footballers and their WAGs who usually spend more time looking at themselves in the mirror than paying attention to the road) I was taking one out from the barn down the lanes for an MOT. Had this great big F*** Off bullying BMW X something 2 inches from my rear bumper. What is missing between the ears to make people drive like that, no provocation involved, just an ignorant w****** that made my blood pressure almost explode. In a modern car myself I would either flash the brake lights whilst still accelerating or speed off, depending on mood, what car I'm driving and what the car behind is EXTRA:D. In the Mini I was too scared to do any pretend brake testing and way too slow to get away. Was a most unpleasant experience and made me feel probably the most vulnerable I've ever felt in a car. I vowed never to drive an old Mini again, just too small for me to feel safe in modern day traffic.

Why are cars so unnecessarily big these days? It's not like America here or in Europe with it's huge roads (errr...people) and landscapes. Often the bigger the car, the bigger the ego and t***er inside. It's got worse since a lot of the most recent big SUVs have become genuinely quick too. Grrr.....rant over!

It’s funny - I really noticed the size thing against my old pick up

When the 240Z was rallying 'in period' it was often referred to as the 'big Datsun' and thought to be unwieldy however it's tiny for a 6 cylinder car. I think the length of the bonnet and low roof influenced people's perceptions. I was told that it was similar in size to the Ford Escort of the time which surprised me.

I've just had a look in a book and it is longer than a Mk1 Escort by just 4 inches but it's wheelbase is shorter by 4 inches! The Datsun is 2 inches wider but 4 inches lower.

I know that when I have been followed in my trackday car the family have said how tiny it looks on the road.

A prime example of the excessive oversizing of modern cars is the Mini Countryman. It’s frickin’ massive! A pastiche playing on the Mini brand, with a ton of lard added on. I saw one next to a Z a while back and it was almost comical.

(Sorry Chris - of course I remember you’ve got one. Still doesn’t make it right!! :p )

Wow you met Nico? That's pretty cool! It's so weird she lived in Manchester. And in quite a shitty little flat too apparently. I'm guessing she got with JCC after moving here/there? What a strange couple they would've been.

Think you need an eye test Richie:EXTRAlol:although it does re-inforce your point!
It's not a Mini Countryman!
Her indoors' shopping wagon is the much smaller standard 5 door CooperEXTRA:D:smash:

The music scene in Manchester was like a village really in those days (77-83) especially in the earlier years and I used to play in minor league bands on the scene at the time so knew (on nodding terms mostly) a lot of the Factory/Hacienda crew whom she hung out with and I used to go to a lot of gigs all over the city during that period. I went along early to Rafters that night and it was more or less empty aside from the DJ and a couple of others. As I got to the bottom of the stairs entering the club she was sat there with an unlit cigarette in her mouth looking elegantly wasted, she smiled said hello and asked me for a light. Being a smoker at the time I was only too happy to oblige. We passed a few pleasantries and then my girlfriend arrived. She lived in a flat with JCC but unsure if they were ever an item or just good friends with shared interests!

Apologies for taking this thread waaaay off topic 😂

I’m pretty sure that was where Musicbox was/is? Not been back for a while probably something else now.

Still on topic talking about Manchester EXTRA;) - the destination used as an example to take a journey from down Saarf to in a classic (or not) by Robbie J.

Rafters was on Oxford Road, it was a great smaller intimate venue for punk/new wave bands before they had too much commercial success and needed to play larger venues such as Ardwick Apollo. It closed in 1983 and think it then became a heavy metal/rock venue Jilly's until early 90's. Don't know about Musicbox as after my time but weird to think it's now a Tescos? Should have a blue plaque in my bookEXTRA:D Rob Gretton and Tony Wilson discovered Joy Division on a talent night held at Rafters, where Ian Curtis infamously called Tony Wilson a c*** - talking of whom, and nearly on topic, Tony Wilson used to drive an old Jag Mk2, always knew when he was in the Hacienda as it would be parked right outside the door on Whitworth Street West.

It was Jilly's in one half and Musicbox next door. I used to go to both a fair bit when I moved back in 2007, but they weren't around long.

My dad used to have a beautiful bright red Mk2 Jag. One day some guy who'd just come out of a mental health hospital took a concrete block to it for no apparent reason while dad was playing in a pub (unless he really hated the music - quite possible). He completely did in every panel and every window. But the car wasn't written off and basically got a complete restoration on the insurance, which saved my old man a lot of time and money 😂

I've got a story about Tony Wilson too but I can't share it publicly!

Here's jillys and musicbox back when I was going..
