LHD compatible exhaust for '74 260Z

Hi all,

I've read a few threads about exhausts but struggling to find conclusive options for my US import.

Do any US import owners have suggestions for a direct fit? I've got triple Weber's with a stock exhaust manifold.

Zstory looks good. Fujitsubo is what I used to really want but I think I'd like a single pipe exit no bigger than 2".

I don't want it too load, I'd just like a bit of throaty exhaust to compliment the triple carb noises. It's only a street car so no huge need for performance.

Any suggestions would be great, and any findings on LHD compatibility.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy.

The Legalis exhaust line will give you no bigger than 2'', just twin exits.

Why do you think you'd like a single exit no bigger than 2'' ?

Is yours an L26, are there any improvemants besides triples (40mms ?) ?

I don't believe in one size fits all and then everyone drives differently so I have a choice of 4x manifolds.

If you want quotes and images, simply email me ; happy to answer all questions.

Thanks both!

Hi Sean,

Yes, L26 and 40mm Webers are the only improvement. I won't be tracking it, or if I did it wouldn't be serious. I'm just after a fun to drive road car to enjoy on country roads. If I can get a new Exhaust now and Manifold later, that would be perfect. My Driving style would be fairly relaxed with some spirited driving, given it is supposed to be a sports coupe. As above, noise to compliment the engine/webers, not drown it out.

Purely for the look of the car, I'd like a subtle sized single exhaust. There's a 240z in the states called the Green Hornet, it's subtle looks are similar to what I'm going for and that has a single, relatively small exhaust.

Do you do a system that would bolt on to the existing N36 manifold? I'm sure this wouldn't get the most out of the exhaust, it's just the timeline I'd like to use. I haven't driven the car on the road yet, this year hopefully, and a new exhaust would be ace, as the one on it is a crusty stock exhaust. I'd happily then get a manifold in another 6-12 months to improve the system.

Cheers

Hi Andy.

A very special car and great icon to idolise.

I think you'll find that his exhaust outlet is more like 3'' - perhaps you can confirm this visually on one of his videos - certainly looks bigger than my single outlet of 2.5''.

Hi Sean,

Ah yeah, you're right. 2.5" isn't that big. This size is perfect, the same back box and size, with a straight vertical cut off is what I've been hoping to find. Rather than the slanted tip.

Do you know who's Z this is? It's got the same wheels as mine, always excited to see them on other Z's.

Slanted or vertical I'd be happy, I'm just after the right look for the era of the car.

Car belongs to Jean-Louis at Le Mans.

These people seem to, imply that th stock tip was slant-cut : https://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic19h/15-7010

$245 and mine is all stainless-steel $165, less shipping and no customs.

I guess the original outlet was straight cut and many over the years have added on chromed tips of both shapes :

To answer your earlier question, I don't currently haveb a downpipe kit to form the liason between stock exhaust manifold and my line.....I'm working on it and I hope to have it ready for the end of the year but the virus has slowed everything down !

Ace thank you. For the owner and exhaust info!

I unsurprisingly, I do like the look of your system. I wonder if I can get your muffler and tip fitted to my existing exhaust, maybe with my local garage doing a small piece to connect them together.

Do you have any costs on shipping to the UK at the moment? Not sure if it'll be cheaper or more expensive with what's going on.

Cheers
Andy

Anything is possible !

What is your current exhaust pipe external diameter ?

£131 + £23 postage - no change in price, simply slower !

Cool. Thank you. It's in the garage getting some work done now so will see how that goes first.

How much for the rest of the system including manifold? Nice to have a target for when I can do the lot. :)

There are several manifold versions but for a car remaining stock or 'ish', I would reccomend the least expensive, my Fast-Road, line and Classic silencer :

£920 (or £890 for Zclub members) and £63 shipping (tracked and insured).

Let me know your current exhaust line ext diameter when you can.

Best regards - stay safe and well !

Looks ace. It really does.

Yep, will do. I'm sure it's stock but I'll try get a measurement. I can ask the garage to measure it or go down and do it myself. I like seeing it on ramps and seeing underneath.

Original - factory - exhaust finisher tip was slash cut.

Jay Ataka of JDM Car Parts has written a very well researched and illustrated blog entry on the subject:

Hi Sean,

I've measured the inner pipe the backbox is connected to, just right of the U clamp. Which is 45 mm:
UkXn2UGLx1n9FuhOtc40wjz2IFM7YlggCZoxgnuYnET6Hi8-v4AB2bziE_Rw0FsdUb7RguCHxEG5N4usjT9TUTDCRQmccl46BTP7kN-1-tNC783mlUeuMVDsgxrmxB4U7OmjXf3Y11qj6XFZGIyP6C_jzfCJYpjDpfq571kh6OAt1Z8i1Mb9FVYidYJFRLkHJGY1fNvBtuA97nruB3U19mBd7DP4JdBR-IY2yNfKyw_KK9cy48AP7f9QzthaXK9I29TNvuzcHF6c9uAAGcU-Xyk_eW3RilNGPx9S8y2CZzStGsiNGLljcImMCqd4ihkyKC4qODAJV-akb2GdGjRzTMU__mj9G4WTFCX-9mj4t-1ZaNBu1zYd0TnzFxHzYX-9sWv5OAq2eSmtBX2cMjPBKDMnYInQYzFkDI0BKNPoWaq7wd32_SPVnkNp7Wf-08OWYl4FXLQu_DbVLLN4B4JbbgcS_PzTI_UmPyEVj37Cw-K59VQqAfKsWX0AApTRKRb95HpzsKaZ5S1-0kmxizRPw7zq-WfL4-VLD37jeOonyWZlm_cqF6hynA4KSSXr95Ay9gu9kCvdvmWGqxbe-h1T-reXtwMW7_5ErJlHJ5dcqP_p-bKYAdh0JND4AJdelj2KFLPbThvYa27zmYKRKhX5Zntzql648U6ppI_UHyXRNIkOCOAeatiSl9iFLm-REgU=w978-h1303-no

And measured a short middle tube, the more silver looking pipe in this pic, measured just to the right of the U clamp. Which is 41 mm:

This is what the backend of the exhaust looks like, not tons of straight pipe to play with to get a short adapting piece to connect the jump in diameter:

Yep, can see those !

Thoughts....how long is the exhaust expansion box - no entry and exit pipe - just the box ? Mine is 380mm long. Maybe you do have enough room to put on an adaptor pipe.

Otherwise, what are the options at the front of the exhaust line - supposing you fitted my line - how would the liason be to your exhaust manifold ?
