Valve adjustment so far out I can move the rocker arms either side of the lash pads

Hi all,

This is my first time restoring a car and taking apart an engine, so i'm learning as I go along. Recently the notch that holds the camshaft inline with the camhaft gear sheared off and my engine lunched itself and bent most of the valves, so i've began to take it apart to rebuild, and I noticed that i can swivel the rocker arms left and right either side of the lash pads! I'm just wondering how on earth it could have gotten this bad? has this engine just been severely neglected?

Have you taken the valves out yet?

If not you will have some very big valve clearances because any bent valve can't return to it's seat.
