Datsun 240Z - 1971 Blue Metallic 903 - Resto

Have you seen these markings on many cars?

Oh yes, quite a few. It's fairly common, especially on cars that were for markets other than the North American.

Essentially they were written by Nissan Shatai's workers to help identify parts and cars in-house, either for special processing/checking/spec and/or logistics/transport. They were not for 'us' as customers, they were for understanding and use within the manufacturing and delivery process.

So yours says 'Igirisu' in Katakana, but you sometimes see Kanji and/or Hiragana mixed up with Roman alphabet. The most common thing to see is usually the factory variant code, sometimes with a destination market noted too. I've seen UK market 240Zs with 'HS30', 'HS30U' or 'HS30QU' chalked under there, and also 'England' written as 'ENG'. It depends who wrote it, and when. Japanese market cars tended to have even more abbreviated shorthand chalkings, just to identify the sub-variant. This is why I was interested to see what was chalked under the glovebox of this Portuguese model.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, so mine is literally just stating English market car. Is there anything to look for, or anywhere else of interest to look, on my car?

I’ve just picked up a dash from a left hand drive car that was from the Netherlands but I believe was from the US. I’ll check the glovebox just in case later this week.

As Alan once directed me to check for, my Japanese market car has “S30” chalked under the glove box.

Also, keep an eye out for the “ken” marks - little circular inspectors’ stamps on various components like the dash instruments. They have date info on them. Kind of informs the story of your car’s assembly.

Hi friends,

Here I come again to show some updates ... because I'm on vacation Z is growing with another rhythm, but still go slow ... Mr. Victory is enjoying holidays ...

In the last 3 days I have cleaned more pieces than in a year of restoration !!! bolts, nuts, washers ... clean, polish, paint ... the luck is that as I was the one who disassembled the car and got everything labeled... in the midst of my disorganization is not going badly...so far…

At the moment I am waiting for the pieces of the galvanized process, they must arrive on Wednesday and unexpectedly I have to buy some pieces, I am missing two details that possibly the car no longer had, the central plate of the license plate and two black aluminium scuff plates that are in the inside the car. Possibly they were removed by the previous owner.

The mechanics should come in January and until then we will build what we can !!!

Let's go to the photos:

After a cleaning and a polishing were very good! After it was applied with new screws and new rubbers, the old pieces were miserable.

IMG-20181220-165558.jpg

The door locks were painted in the old car colour, I still thought of having zinc, but chrome is funnier and the result is very curious ... I like it !!!

You've been busy. Very nice.
I wish mine had seat hinge covers like that. Anyone know if they're available anywhere?

It was lucky I guess! A friend of mine offered them to me! they fit excellent!!! I saw some for sale on ebay! But on some FB foruns I think you can get a decent pair!

You can get the repro seat hinge covers from the usual US suppliers. I bought a pair. Expensive, but nice. Nearly fitted as well! Slight bit of work with a file and they were fine.

I am enjoying reading this restoration and admiring the work however I have two areas that I am critical of. Sorry and I know that you could find fault with my cars but considering all the work that has gone into this car these two areas spoil it for me. One (the strut nuts) is easily rectified the other will take work - is it too late?

I don't like painted nuts and washers.

The radiator lower cross-member looks rough.

The rest of the car is lovely and yes John I agree the seats are superb.
