260Z Tail Light Trims

I have seen refurbished 'chrome on plastic' trims for the rear light panels on ebay at some massively unrealistic cost but am aware that there are many specialist firms here in the UK that can do this process. The problem is separating the 'chrome on plastic' bits from the body of the light panels. Looking though at my 260z's light panels the 'chrome' bits seem incapable of being separated and appear to be a single moulding. Has anyone managed to remove just the chrome sections? If so is it an easy thing to do:unsure:. It would be nice to bring them back to something like there original appearance as probably like most others the mirror surface has rubbed away over the years.

They outer chrome trims are screwed to the rear lamp body from the back of the lamp
Remove the lamps and foam backing gasket and you should see the little screws
If you are lucky the screws will still be there, if not you will see rusted blobs of what's left of them :D

The chrome bits are held on by tiny screws, a bit awkward to remove as the screws inevitably rust, i had to use tiny grips to remove a couple of them as the heads were too far gone. If I remember correctly, you need to remove the dark grey plastic surrounds from the white plastic lens units to even see the screws holding the chrome bits on.

[EDIT] i type too slow!

yeah i've seen those on ebay too. they look amazing but well over $500 with import duty. i've searched all over the north west but nobody wants to touch chroming plastic. if you find somewhere that will do them i think the cheapest way will be to try and get maybe half a dozen done all at once. you can defo count me in as mine are scruffy.

I think its called vacum plating or something like that,i had 2 sets done in the states cos as you said no one here wants to touch em,i even sent mine off to a few firms so they could have a look, the set i have for sale are now really heavy as they have real chrome on them and dont feel like plastic, but as stated they aint cheap if done properly.its like the old saying, you buy cheap you get cheap, simple as that, ive seen some of the cheap ones and they are pants, might be able to do you a deal if you are interested in a pair

A member on here had his done a year or more ago and offered to get other members' done if you sent them to him - he got a lot of interest on the forum, but then nothing came of it and I can't now recall who it was. Don't think he paid anything like those prices in the States.

Hi

It was me that had them done, £40 at the time, I think Highwaystar spoke to them recently and they wanted a lot of money.

Borough's in Southend, they do new car parts for Vauxhall etc.
