Headlight bulb

My left headlight is not working (presumably blown bulb) and when i put on my headlights the remaining working one is stuck on full beam. Is this normal or do i have more than just a blown bulb. I assume getting a new bulb will not be a problem. Can anyone help a mechanically challenged 300ZX owner?

Have you got an UK or a J-spec? The J bulbs are different.

Whereabouts are you?

sorry, i've been a lurker and never a talker before. Hi to everyone. I'm a UK ZX300 (1992) owner from Edinburgh. I'm a huge 300 fan but must confess to having little techie knowledge. All help welcomed.

As it is a UK car, there will be no problem in sourcing bulbs. If you find the dip beam too dim (they are notorious for this) you might like to upgrade to 85w from places such as Powerbulbs

Others suggest fitting a relay dedicated to the headlights so they get a dedicated feed straight from the battery. Mine had this done in Japan but I don't know where to get such a thing in the UK.

Yet another suggestion can be found on Zedworld who can strip and clean and line the lamp housing. Some love this and some don't. Your choice.

Although I'm not a techie, it sounds as if you've got a switch problem as well - or perhaps this is the basic problem? Try a local dealer or auto electrical specialist.

Good luck - Gio

Hi,
Try just changing the bulb first...If it's UK spec. then Halfords will have a straight replacement (no soldering required ).
When a bulb blew on my Z32 jap import it did make all the other lights come on including the main beam at the same time! It's worth checking the fuse under the bonnet as well if a new bulb doesn't cure it, as mine blew, but some of the lights still worked.

Yes...I thought I had a major wiring problem until I fitted a new bulb and the lights were OK again.
Whilst fitting the replacement bulb, from Halfords...one which I had soldered a spade connector onto, I managed to blow the fuse under the bonnet as well. This resulted in the main beam and dipped coming on together on one side of the car.
Very wierd!

Blown light fuse causes the Full beam to stay on no matter what way the switch is, well it did on mine twice

good news it that it was both a blown bulb and blown fuse, and Halfords fixed it for £5, including putting the bulb in. Never thought you could get such great service from a national chain. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.
