What did you do to your Z this week?

Spent a very pleasant morning at JPR Tuning in Bristol with fellow Zedder Paul (farmer42). Paul spent sometime getting his engine gremlins exorcised. They did an excellent job sorting Paul’s car it sounded and ran so sweet after, the power run was very impressive. The young guy there really knows his stuff with carbs and was determined to squeeze more power from them.

My turn and after an initial squint at the antiquated EFI system, the car got strapped down for its run. Unfortunately my gremlins were not so easy to get rid of. On throttle take up the engine was retarding about 10 to 15 degrees before picking up the revs and advancing as it should do. Prognosis being one knackered distributor.

The power run was pleasing, and yes you do have to take the figures with a pinch of salt. The power was smooth across the range and if to be believed the car was putting out almost 30 more horses that when it rolled out of the factory. The car was leaning out at the higher revs slightly earlier than expected from the stock EFI system, but pleasing all the same. So all my tinkering has paid off. Now to replace the dizzy with a 123 and do a rerun.

Had a clean after Wilton run and I braved filling up to half a tank of fuel with more Esso 99+, still no leaks yet! Going to replace the first fuel filter soon as it was in before tank clean so could be a restriction. All runs well on the road though.

If the colour tune plugs are to be believed, it leans out a little at constant higher rpm and the two Hitachi flat tops are not completely balanced at idle with one running slightly richer than the other, looks balanced under load and higher rpms though!

Surely the Colortune can't be used under load.

This week or so I've been working on a few fluid leaks.
First up was coolant leaks from spark plug cavities on #1,3,6 - I don't know why they started leaking now, with the new 3.2 bottom end; the head's been in use for 4 or 5 years without this problem (well, #6 leaked back 5 years ago). Anyway, the fix is loctiting in little spark plug recess liners. I couldn't get a photo that showed it, which is a shame since it's a neat solution.

Second was my gearbox - it's been slowly leaking gear oil out of the tailshaft seal ever since I fitted the S13 box. I'm sure I would have fitted a new seal along with all the new bearings and synchros, but perhaps I missed it. Anyway, for the first time in a long time, my exhaust under the propshaft is now dry!
I put it off for year because it's such a faf getting the exhaust, ARB and propshaft out and getting to the seal, but up on my wonderful car lift it was a piece of cake.

And lastly, I've worked out where my clutch fluid has been going. It's been loosing fluid for a few weeks, and I keep checking the slave cylinder and hose and on the floor under the car, but there's never anything there.
It turns out it's leaking down master cylinder pushrod into the cabin and removing the paint from everything in its path.
I've ordered a new one from Rockauto (£27 delivered!) but it won't arrive until next week, so I'll be topping up all the way to JK and Oulton at the weekend.

Nothing physically to the car, but i have taken the plunge and ordered a power steering kit from the US, which Chris Vega is kindly shipping over in a car for me to lessen the postage and import costs

My list of jobs is just getting longer!

1. Most importantly, finishing properly fitting my new (2 years ago!) brake booster and MC.
2. Fit my self refurbed British SU's in place of the current 240 items.
3. Fit throttle cable conversion.
4. Fit cold air intake and box.
5. Renew the manifold gasket and at the same time, clean and wrap my Janspeed header, then fit a Z Story exhaust.
6. fit new 60 amp alternator.
7. fit power steering.
8. Get my S13 box fitted, shorten prop etc (most likely @ 4ways)
9. Fit new Diff mount.
10. Fit new track rod ends and ball joints.
11. Fit numerous additional poly bushes and at the same time clean and epoxy mastic paint as much suspension bits as possible.
12. Remove, clean, re-furb the wiper linkage.
13. Replace heater blower motor with the Honda one I've had for about 6 years!
14. Remove the rear lights and panel for a clean and new paint.
15. Fit some sound deadening.

Replaced all the front arms, tie rods, brakes and bearings at the front of my 350z. Took it for an alignment to be charged £50 and told that my new tie rods are seized and they couldn't do it.

Was not impressed and will not be returning to this garage in the future!

So what was the £50 for? Shocking.

I got mine home
LOTS to do but it is running and driving
Some pics attached after a quick clean-up
I think job #1 is the air flow meter, it's pretty banged up, engine running rich and the thing is held together with wire

Ordered my ZStory stainless exhaust system to replace a mild steel one which came with my car. Its serviceable so plan to tidy up and sell it for a 2/2 or 2+2 S30 owner soon. Looking forward to a nicer sound and getting something to last!
