Z History Check

Is there any way to check the history of an old Z? I'm guessing the usual way of car text check may not work given its age. I've just managed to land a genuine RHD 260z rolling shell which will replace my frankenZtein 280z shell. (Anyone want a cheap 280z shell?) The shell has been dry stored in the owners garage and hasn't been on the road for 22 years. The .Gov tax check reveals its untaxed and has been since 1989! It still has the log book from 1989 too. The car belonged to someone called Rodger Brown from Rutherglen in Glasgow. Be nice to find some information on it.

Obviously there are no MOT records given its age.

Does anyone think I'll have an issue with this or will it just be a case of declaring sorn once everything is filled out on the new online system?

Thanks for any advice and help.

Liam

Is this the car that’s currently in primer?

Good luck with it, I hope there are no surprises for you with this one.

That is the one buddy. I have been in talks with the seller. I have received videos and pictures of everything I've asked for and so far so good.

I thought the club's committee was strict about controversy and it's position and responsibility vis a vis the law?

Good luck to you Liam although why not really do the shell justice and rebirth a rare UK market 260Z ?

I'm therefore surprised to see a club rep condone a 'swap' and risk losing its unique identity where there remain only a handful.

At least communicate via PM be discreet.

Thirty two years then, not 22! So this shell has a VIN and V5? If so, why not just have yourself a hybrid 260Z, or have I read this wrong and that is what’s happening?

What are you talking about Sean? Why on earth would anybody switch the identity from a bad 280z to a good 260z shell?

Eh?

I think you have the totally wrong end of the stick here Sean. This is a genuine car with documents and a number plate. My 280z has documents and a number plate. What we mean is all the modifications I've purchased custom subframe, etc will all fit onto a later model shell.

I didn't even notice I just went off what he told me on the phone. He must have meant 32 years then!

Yes I will be putting my RB and all my fancy bits etc into this 260z shell.

So instead of having a hybrid 280 with a sadly-discovered poorly welded monocoque and all the nice bits on, you’re going to end with a hybrid 260 with a very good shell and all the nice bits on! Superb, and well done for sourcing the decent shell and keeping the project and dream alive!

Spot on! As long as the 260z is as good as it looks.

I have the previous owners names and details (all from 1989 mind you) and just wanted to see if there was a way to get any info on it from the past.

You used to be able to write to the DVLC, as it was (in the days when people actually put pen to paper) and upon paying five English pounds they provided you with a list of the previous registered owners and their addresses at the time.

In 1986 I did just this exercise in an effort to find out more about the history of my just-purchased Triumph Stag, a 12yo car that I found had had 11 previous owners ... I wrote the same letter to each of the addresses, and I think I had about four replies, all of which said it was a dog and they were glad to see the back of it, which should have told me something.

Looking back I can blame youth and stupidity for the purchase.

I don’t think the DVLA (as it is now) provide the service as it’s all curtailed by the GDPR nonsense, sadly.

You could PM a club admin (I don’t know who is membership secretary, Johnbills?) with the reg number and see if it has been a member’s car in the past, or if you are happy to you could share the reg or vin on here to and see if it’s been recorded in the grey matter of anyone who reads it.

Dunno, good shell/ bad shell makes no difference....relieved that the 260Z will live albeit an engine swap....so long as it's loved.
Must be my week of covid-19 English variant no less) disrupting my English comprehension.

Good point. I'll give JB a message and see if there is any club history on it.

Liam.

Please can you email photos, details, into and price of your 280Z?
I think I have someone interested.
Cheers,
Sean

I think you'd get good money sticking it on eBay. you'd surprise yourself.

That is true. Its probably the most honest shell out there. Completely rust free (from where a media blaster can access) and completely bare. Everything is visible. Nothing hidden unless theres something beneath the skins but I have no reason to believe there would be.
