Thanks Mark.

Its amazing what can be hidden in the unseen areas of our cars, or what sins can even be hidden under a layer of filler in some cases. Only way to make sure its done properly is to put in the hours. Theres no way I'll be doing another restoration like this again, too costly. But happy to get this car done properly and make sure it will last me a long time into the future.

I'm sure some tidy cars are fine under the skin and others are not, hard to know isn't it. Thats what led to me going this far, I needed to know what it was like even where I couldn't see.

I love how CB550s can look, great looking bikes, I'm sure it rides ok for short runs? Its actually a bike I had considered building at some point. Not sure how mine will ride yet as I've only had it down my lane so far.

I've been making some changes to her already.

If you know its a keeper then its really nice to know you will eventually have something that can just be enjoyed. Keep it up! I hear you, I'm not sure I'd want to start digging, I'm too busy enjoying it as it is anyway. One day maybe I'll be showing photos of my restoration!

I've had a soft spot for them for years, the inline four sounds mega! Haha well I've not had much opportunity to ride it, rode it home (in hindsight I shouldn't have in its condition at the time) pulled it apart, finally finished it at the start of December and have only had awful weather since. The few local test spins I've done have been fine, I'm just used to more modern bikes and honestly prefer riding them in hindsight.

The ride is a bit firm, the front brake despite a full rebuild and braided lines feels soft and over 80mph is a little terrifying. Otherwise its great

Your's looks mega, crazy seeing the differences bearing in mind they're the same year. Much beefier brakes!

Is it shaft drive?

Can't wait to start enjoying it on the road again. Although I'll probably be very careful with it I'm definitely going to be driving it as that for me is the whole point and I really love driving it, its so rewarding to drive and just loads of fun.

If I were you I'd just drive it for a long time, mine wouldn't have showed any problems for a long time anyhow, only thing which pushed me to the resto sooner than planned was the damage from the old lady pulling out in front of me.

Springs could be changed for softer ones. You can retrofit dual discs to these which apparently makes a big difference.

They are not the same year, I just made a mistake in my post, mine is actually 1987, K100s were first released in 1983. The brakes are good, though I might upgrade brakes and shocks to S1000RR items. If not I'll just rebuild the callipers and change all the discs to floating ones.

Is it shaft drive?
Yes, something to get used to as apparently they drive differently, although not noticed much so far, but then I've not been out of second gear yet.

I don't blame you, they're meant to be driven and enjoyed after all. I put 8-9000 miles on mine in 2019 before I left the country and loved every mile. I will certainly keep enjoying mine and offset that day for as long as possible. Really looking forward to seeing yours all back together and on the road again.

Well that's tasty isn't it, I love the cone muffler and full cafe look. They've done some really tasteful mods! I know of the dual disk conversion but the single pot clappers still leave a lot to be desired. There are other aftermarket options too. Realistically I only have the space, time and budget for one bike though and I like touring so the sensible option is to get something more modern that I don't have to worry about. I like the idea of turn key fun. I wish I had the resources for both honestly...

Ahhh interesting, that's some serious resto modding and stopping power. I totally approve, there's some great support for the BMW builds!

Interesting, something I've never experienced. I've heard they're super reliable though, meant to be the preferred option for a RTW bike with no chain to maintain.

Great pictures love seeing how your car is coming on ,a lot of your repairs are similar to what I have done or will be doing like you want the car to be as rust free as possible so worth going that extra mile. Great dedication on your part
Regards Derrick ;)

There’s a tremendous amount of work going on here but when finished is going to be sensational. Exceptionally high standard of workmanship, I know it all costs but your doing it so right.

Thanks Derrick. I think there comes a point when its gone so far that you might as well just do everything you can to remove and prevent any corrosion, to not do so would be crazy given the cost as you don't want to have to ever venture down this road again.

Thanks Pondo: I think I found the right people for the Job and I am doing as much as I can possibly afford to make it as good as possible. I'll be so happy when its done knowing that every area has been looked at. Don't think there are any sealed sections left now that have not been checked for rust.

Thought I'd add a bike update. I did a ton of work on this to get it through its MOT, first one since 2014. So many thing had been done wrong, but I got there in the end, it kept me amused during my 3 months home on leave, I learnt a lot and had many great times riding around on it over the summer.

I may have a bike building addiction now. Once the RB-Z is back on the road I plan to get another bike project on the go. I am thinking of restoring car and bike parts on the side so it would give me many parts to show my work with.

Great work Ian (and your garage).

A couple of things had me taking a second look:

Isn't that the driver's side floor?

You shown the floor strengthener channel being extended but later show a pic of the underside and it doesn't seem to show the extension - is it my eyes?

You are correct, I wasn't paying enough attention when posting this.

There is something there, but it was version number one as a test, trying to make it work with the stock anti roll bar mounting location, the boss didn't like it so it ended up with the version you see in the photo, I do not have an an underside photo with the final version fitted. Good eyes on you.

Can people still see the recent photos from the update? Because they are not appearing for me.

I struggle to see some of your photos and they only work sometimes if I use a VPN (currently in back in Brazil).
I haven't had issues with any other photos on the site though.

Lots of the images don't load for me. They're hosted on photobucket but proxied from rmsmotoring.com. lots of opportunities to go wrong!

I can see them all still, but i do use a PC most of the time not the phone or tablet for viewing the forum.

I would try and fix it, but not possible as you cant edit your posts after they have been up a few hours. Perhaps I can get access to do this temporarily from admin?

I can't do this on an individual basis unfortunately but if you let me know what you want to change I can do it for you.
