The rear wheels are positioned towards the front of arches - hence why, as you note, things look off on your car with the overfenders as they are currently. I think it is also exacerbated by the fact your car is sitting on 17s. It kind of amplifies the problem IMO (from the visual effect of the large wheels with the polished lips). The rear wheels would look more tucked in with the overfenders on the right sides and that big gape wouldn't be there.

Didn't some cars (the early ones?) have the wheels in a slightly different position to the later ones? Or have I just dreamed that?!

Yep, all those things are exacerbating the problem. I think that even if I switch the arches around, with the wheels as they are it'll still look off-centre. TTT do adjustable control arms which can bring the wheels up to 1/2" rear-ward, which will help.

The car has always been missing the inner door channel felting which means the window would vibrate when wound down. I finally managed to order a length of the material from East Kent Trim Supplies, at a cost of approx. £20 delivered. Was finally motivated to fix this as the interior door handle suddenly decided to stop working - meaning I'd have to wind down the window to let myself out via the exterior handle... Entertaining!

Felting went in easy enough, simply cut down to size and fit it in. Window now comfortably goes down without wobbling.

The inside door cable bolt had come loose and fell inside the door. Thankfully the nut was still in place and after reattaching the door handle works perfectly again.

Whilst I had the door cover off, I also put a bunch of Dynamat sound deadening inside the door and on the face - hoping this would stop the "drum effect" t hat the door has when closing. It worked really well and the door feels a lot more solid :)

Still no exciting updates.. but did the other door today - again it made such a good difference. I'd happily recommend some strategically placed sound deadening to anyone looking to make the car feel a little more solid and quiet

If I wanted to make my Z more solid and quiet, I'd drive my other car! I want to drive it as if it were 1972. Okay, I'm not in the US but Allan Clarke has headed the winner for Leeds in the Cup Final and Datsun will sell over 30,000 cars in the UK this year ...

It absolutely does not sound quiet  But the drum-like noise when shutting the door sounds significantly more solid. You can definitely still hear that 70's in it, don't worry :hurray:

Did you have to remove the window frame to replace the channel felt?

No, you can feed it into the bottom of the channel and then roll the window down into it, and then push it back up the channel when you roll the window up. It was a little fiddly but doable

The theme of this build thread always to be becoming a pile of excuses as to why my car is not progressing :jester:

Shortly after my last post, my wife and I welcomed our first child into the world and, unsurprisingly, spare time become absent. Between some health concerns in my little family and a quickdeployment overseas, I've only just started to find energy to tinker again - just in time for another deployment next month :banghead:

During the Christmas stand down, I tried to get the Z serviced in anticipation of said baby, however I was caught short when the baby arrived early and I was left with an engine bay in pieces

The aim of the work was to:
  • Replace all fluids - oil change, brake fluid, transmission oil, differential oil and coolant
  • Replace coilpacks
  • Replace spark plugs
  • New cam cover gaskets and half moons
  • Refresh cam cover paint
  • Replace top U-bend rubber vent hose
  • Clean the engine bay as it was getting a bit dirty!
It wasn't supposed to be a big job, but it's left the car unusable since Christmas.
Hopefully I'll get this stuff finished off so I can tackle some of the other jobs that are left to do !

You can see the state of the cam covers in this picture - it bothered me every time I looked at the engine (which for me is what makes the car even more special)

And a Birthday present from my parents, this LED light bar is super handy - and I'm fairly confident it was designed with the 240z bonnet in mind as it fits perfectly!
