Gearbox plunger orientation question

I'm sorting out a 5 speed gearbox and I've bought a replacement plunger because the old one was heavily scored. It's the part shown here:

Here is the new and old one side by side:

As you can see the new one has a pinhole in it (presumably to allow oil flow?) whereas the old one didn't.

Onto my question... should the hole the at the top or the bottom?

If the hole is to allow oil flow, should it be at the top to allow oil in or below to allow oil to drain?
