FIA HTP Datsun 240Z Period G2 1970-1971 GTS21 - Wheels

I would be very interested if anyone has any information on wheels (not tyres) that the 240z ran in period 70/71 when racing (competition) and especially interested if anyone has any photos of them.

As I understand it, the FIA will accept certain types of wheel if you can prove that they were in common usage in period.

Any thoughts / comments / information would be helpful! Thank you.

I am confusing myself on this point I think... Appendix K states:

So then I go to Appendix J 1970 and presumably the Datsun 240Z comes under "series production Grand Touring Cars" (more than 1,000 made). This section then refers the reader to the rules being the same as Group 1 (series production touring cars)

So I guess I then need to work out any wheels that were recognised in period. Unless I am reading the regs in completely the wrong way which with me is always a possibility!?

FIA 3023 homologation was for Group 3, with amendments/evolutions for Gr0up 4.

Presumably your enquiry is regarding a car which has already been built and has already competed in an FIA-sanctioned event in recent years? In which case, why ask about Group 2?

And does this concern the ACO? If so, I think it's sometimes the case that All Bets Are Off, and it's the ACO who you need to be getting clarifaction from.

Hi Rob, is this for the LMC? I understand that you are running in Plateau 5 this year is that true?

I am not sure the FIA now issue G3 HTPs? I thought it was only G1 & G2 with FIA 3023 homologation used for their so called "G2" category but again I could be wrong. Whichever group it all stems back to the Series Productions Touring Cars section with the condition that "as long as there are enough cars equipped with such wheels to justify recognition". All a minefield of information to me.

Not particularly for LMC but yes I have got an entry. Just curious as to what wheels people raced with in period...

I could come up with a list as long as your arm, but the question is - as often is the case with FIA, and the nonsense that is HTP - is it actually appropriate to what you are trying to achieve and will the FIA (or the ACO) accept it?

In the past I've been involved with helping to 'prove' historic, in-period, use of certain parts and it can be very frustrating. For example, proof of period use of 15" diameter wheels in FIA-sanctioned events was eventually accepted, but the FIA refused to accept what I considered to be totally irrefutable evidence of aluminium radiators in HLS30s and HS30s in period and in events they themselves had sanctioned and scrutineered. Total nonsense.

I agree - it is really difficult to navigate through all of this. Whilst 15" wheels are accepted there is nothing I can find to say what the maximum width they should be - I know that in the past anything up to 8 inch wide wheels have been accepted (and I have this documented) I also have a set of 9 inch wide wheels which I tend to run when the wheel choice is free. Also there is nothing about whether wheels can be split rim or not as far as I can tell! I should therefore just stick to 15 x 8 one piece wheels but if wider wheels were used in period and there was some proof of this somewhere it would be good to record this so that anyone racing a Datsun would have this option in the future...or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

There have been wider wheels than 8'' accepted Rob and split rims too.

Your problem will be more a case of adapting your bodywork to accept them.

As Alan mentioned, the ACO was a law unto itself and the X-factor continues with Peter Auto ; the year before your first participation there, I was involved with a Belgain entry via Ad V. in Holland and the car was refused because : they had decided that all Datsun entries should ressemble that which entered in 1975 ie full works 'ZG' format. And then they accepted yours o_O so tread carefully too !
