Rust pics prior to restoration

I was recently sorting through some old photo albums and came across the below pics, so scanned them in to show you guys doing import resto's, just how bad a UK car could be back in the day

I remember my car being very rusty in places, but the state the chassis legs were in is frightening to see!

Also i haven't got any before pics of the front cross member and rad support panel which were also very ropey

The amount of rot they can accomodate without snapping in half is a credit to the strength of Japanese rust. They don’t make rust like they used too

Yeh, definitely looked like it had been patched before, probably several times on the chassis, it was hidden with neatly applied under seal, just think i was driving around in it for a year or so before the full extent of the rot was discovered!

It's amazing how much they can rot Nd where

I am in proces of repairing my mate 280z he has, gone in places they go behind wing on sill section, wing bottom gone dog leg gone lower rear qauter

Back in 1991 the samuri had a lot of welding done to her and it's all photo and that had a lot new metal put in

The dogleg area is a right pain in the arse. Once you deconstruct it, it’s very apparent why even on dry state cars it can be a rust liability. Too many routes for dirt, dust, and moisture to slowly accumulate in there and rot not just the outer skin but the end of the outer sill and the inner structures of the overlaps between inner sill and inner rear quarter. And the bottom of the inner arch. The Project Dixie thread will cover this soon. Here’s a taster:

Yeah this 280z has a fair few bits on it to do like not as rust free as what my mate Mick fort lol keep finding him bits also around bonnet hinge went on one side

Bit late to bring this up, but did you account for the angle of the arch lip on that outer dogleg repair panel? I found that it’s too straight and needs to be adjusted. I’ll cover what I did when I post a big
Dixie update this weekend.
