What did you do to your Z this week?

Washed and polished my car and took it down to Mathewson’s Auctions to be filmed as they are hoping to feature the 3 US import Zs which are for sale in their next auction in an episode of “Bangers and Cash”. I did my bit by looking round the cars and giving them my expert ( = ill-informed bullshit) opinion on their condition and confirming the cars actually were what they thought (1 x 240, 2 x 280). The 240 looked very sound, good basis for a resto. One of the 280s looked decent too. The other, although a more complete car (all the trim etc still in, if a little dirty) had issues with the tailgate, slam panel, sills, doglegs, front wing bottoms, and the back vertical edge of the wings which align with the rear face of the tailgate had rusted through.

No idea if it will be included as an item on the program, it will depend if anybody actually buys them. No sale, no follow-up story, and my piece will be assigned to the cutting room floor. They filmed a piece with the Z sitting moodily in the background as they asked me general questions about it, then filmed me driving it to the auction house (cameras in my car and also filmed from a rear-facing cameraman in an SUV that I followed). Then they set up at the side of the road and filmed a couple of drive-bys.

They had no estimates on the Zs, (edit - Estimates up now.) and I have no idea what they will go for. Not sure why anybody would sell these via an auction house, given the fees involved and the relatively small audience compared to the on-line sites, but I guess there must be a reason that I haven’t thought of. If anybody would like to have a gander at them, there are links to each car on the Classified Discussions section.

Highlight of the day for me was not seeing the rusty Zs, by the way, but the beautiful Alfa Romeo Montreal they have in the sale. Check out their website, it’s gorgeous.

Oh, and if you are wondering how I got the TV gig....it’s because the producers and camera team of Bangers and Cash are old friends of mine. I also blagged an appearance in their original “taster” episode, which was made to show the buyers of the various channels what they would be getting if they commissioned a series. In that one I was a potential buyer of a VW camper

Nice.... i watched most of the first series, really enjoyed it, it's nice to see a mixed bag of vehicles each week and the memorabilia segment is interesting too :)

As i understand it, the PCV allows gases into the inlet manifold when there is high vacuum, so at idle and low speed running, as the vacuum decreases with revs the gases being sucked through slow and eventually stop. If the pressure in the inlet manifold exceeds that in the crank case the valve shuts off to prevent a reverse flow scenario.

Ok I know it must work but I still can't fully understand it. So when the throttle bufferflies are closed and there is high vacuum (I know that from my 1960's Ford days with vacuum operated wipers!) the engine is sucking hard but can't run fast because the throttle is closed and fuel/air can't be drawn through the carbs (only idle circuit). However it can suck fumes from the crankcase because it is 'open' to the balance tube. If you were to take that pipe off (and leave it off) are you saying it wouldn't affect the running or the fuel/air mixture at all throttle settings?

Also if it doesn't suck fumes at 'open throttle' conditions it's a bit inefficient isn't it?

My old trackday car didn't have that pipe anyway (like a lot of modified cars) but it had a 'bung' fitted to the balance bar.

Also I've heard of a solenoid valve being fitted to modified cars which open the balance-bar to air when you switch off to stop the car running on.

If you remove the pipe but leave the PCV in situ, i should imagine it will continue to work as intended. Remove it and don't block the hole and i expect it would cause running issues for sure.

Also if it doesn't suck fumes at 'open throttle' conditions it's a bit inefficient isn't it?

The amount of blow by gases generated by the average engine in good condition will be pretty minimal anyway so hardly an issue i would of thought. If the perceived inefficiency was a problem, every one would have oil bubbling out of the dipstick tube or a gasket somewhere every time they hit the motorway.

Been kitting the workshop. Taking a little longer than I hoped, but getting there slowly, but surely!

Lift going in today. Degrease Tank in, Sand Blaster delivered and ready to connect up. Vapour blaster and compressors next and then building a plating station. Progressed a little further on plating, not perfect yet, learning where pitfalls are, mainly in the preparation and accurate amps etc, my conclusion so far.

A slight distraction, installing underfloor heating throughout and tiling the the house.. It's the last major job on a long project, Once done I'm FREE!.. :)

Going to try out the blaster and HVLP sprayer on my W800 stand

Engine waiting for me to do some plating of cam cover bolts

Still see some pitting. Trying out multiple thick plates with sanding in between. Seems to be the way to go on badly pitted items

Only Z related cus once done I'm free to play haha :)

I'm envious of the garage Tim. Who is the chap helping with the underfloor heating Addison?

I have a plating job for you - front bumper.

He's not driving it - it's one of these trailer queens and he's towing it everywhere... ! I jest ...

We had a guy in the Mustang club who used to trailer his Shelby to the gates of the park on the Annual Day and then drive it in - prep time for the concours was about 10mins as he had nothing to do to it, lived down the road anyway and had spent all week (month) on it already! He wasn't the only one in fact ...
