Toyota Corolla power steering rack

I read that on FB. Looks like it needs some custom ends to get the geometry correct.
I’m not sure what they have used it just looked like it fits well
Most racks I’ve seen fitted bmw , Subaru etc Are longer than the original .
Think if I ever decide to go p.a.s in the future I will have to take a closer look at this option

I work for a company that fit PAS to classic cars. My Z should be back from paint by mid Dec. After that I'll be mocking-up and fitting PAS to mine. If all is well, we could offer this service to others!

Apologies for bringing up an old thread but did anything happen with this?

The reason for asking is that I am looking at options for p.a.s. on my S30. Before anyone starts on the 'wuss' or 'Pansy' route, I have a really bad shoulder that has already had 2 operations and I am still struggling to drive my car especially manoeuvring it in and out of the garage and in tight spaces. I really want to keep driving it but it's fast becoming a big problem. I did the trip from Bristol to Beaulieu yesterday which is about 85 miles or 2 hours and I could hardly move my arm this morning.

I have had a look at the electric versions from EZ and Z Power Steering but not really that keen and they are quite expensive. I have read about different options on other threads mainly the Subaru racks but are there any other options. I am probably going to need to get it fitted by someone else as the issue that is stopping me driving is also having an impact on the stuff I can do to the car. When I found this thread it grabbed my interest.

Would appreciate any update, views or options that are worth considering. Otherwise I will have to save hard and bite the bullet and get one of the electric kits.

Going to playing around with the electric system from a Corsa on mine when I get to that point. The guy doing it uses them on the rally cars he builds. Will let you know costs of parts, and how difficult/easy it is when I get there

If it helps, I could bring a kit back from the US, saving duty etc. Least I could do.

I have brought one to try , but i need another front cross member to modify the rack clamps to try it out , I haven't managed to find one yet though,

I plan to use the 280zx power steering pump that came off my old L28 and get some new hoses made up to fit ,

It looks like its a pretty easy job, its about the same width etc ,

only thing is I have a RHD rack and this flips and fits my LHD car , for a RHD car you would need to find a LHD rack

The power steering one from the US worked out to be about £1300 plus shipping. I don't have that kind of dosh at the moment so they ate probably out of the equation. Not sure if there is anyone else supplying kits.

The Subaru option very much relies on getting hold of the bits. The rack seems obtainable but the Celica inner tie rods are a problem. Then it's what pump to go for if I can get the rack sorted. Then to top it off the cross member will need modifying which is probably beyond my capability.

So, it's a case of hoping someone comes up with a easy-fit option or a less expensive electric kit.

Have now looked into 3 suppliers of the electric kits and they are averaging £1500 which is too expensive for me. So I have bitten the bullet and gone for the Subaru hydraulic option based on the previous YouTube vid.

Picked up a 1999 subaru Forester rack for £70 and just ordered the inner tie rods from an 84 Celica from Rock Auto for about £30. Will need new boots and track rod ends at some point but they are available in the UK.

Will start a separate thread with photos when I start the project which may be awhile as I have just smashed my wrist so am in plaster. I estimate that is should cost me in the region of £350-400 all in which is a lot less expensive than the electric. Will go for a 280zx pump as it will bolt straight onto the block and I already have the bracket & belt.

The only difficult bit I can see is modifying the cross member a bit to allow the pinion to sit comfortably but should be do-able. Watch this space!

Fitting a Subaru Rack was covered in an article by Terry Taylor in a rare Z Club Newsletter. It was the one that came out after we did the NEC Show.

Your right but I think I said that. I went for the mid-range but there are cheaper and dearer versions. Just wish there was a UK version of Rock Auto. They seem to stock everything but you still have the usual shipping costs and exchange rates although it is a lot better than most US based suppliers.

you did later (sorry), are you machining down the ends of the subaru rack so its the exact length of the original rack?
