Hi Guys,
I’m not sure if you’re going to like this or me but I’m the new owner of the notorious DIL 6104.
I purchased this car very recently and have only realised the history of this car via this club
I know i’m in the shi* so please be gentle
Here are a few pictures taken recently!

Hi and welcome,

Yes it has a somewhat tainted background, but I don't think anyone was ever enlightened to the full story on here, so we all assumed the worst...

Hopefully you paid what you thought was fair and you have a lot of enjoyment from it going forward.

I can think of a couple of cars on this forum that are having work done to a standard that people (myself included) would not deem a proper job but are not posting anything at all, so you wont be the first person to buy something that's misrepresented and you won't be the last.

Good luck!
Dan

Hello Hulk, we love you already - you've bought the car (a Z, which is good). And returned it to these forums.

If you've read ALL of the notorious thread, you'll be fully aware of the car and its pluses and minuses. Tell us what you are going to do with it - a bit more work, improving things etc - just driving it etc - I don't think any of us have seen it in person (someone did on its journey to you on the M1 the other day I think) - so can't speak as they find but as you probably know, the guy who did all the work was a bit of a b*llshitter who thought he knew better than the experts on here!

You can tell a lot from the pics of the car that were posted during the work - but there weren't actually that many.

You've bought it - so obviously you liked what you saw. I hope the thread hasn't changed your opinion. What's your car background and are you doing any work required yourself?

Hi Dan,
I think I’ve paid a reasonable price considering the working required, the master plan is to bring this old girl back to a respectable standard. To be honest this is my first project and I’m sure I’m going to need all the help and advice I can get. Hence joining the club.
I know the people on here really love their Z’s and take restoring them seriously!

Hi UK66,
I’m a complete novice to car restorations so I’m going in with both feet.
The plan is to complete strip the car and see if the body needs further repairs. I’m sure I’m opening a car of worms but I’m not one for giving up without a fight.
The work is going to be carried out by a local restoration company in Leeds. I’ve seen some of his work before and I was impressed.

Hi Hulk. I know the car (seen it in pieces) and the owner member who returned it to the road. Both were larger than life.

I would get to know the car and Zedding before you take it off the road again.

I think the gearbox was giving a problem? If so consider the Nissan S14 upgrade - not a straight swap though.

If job number 1 isn't removing the cowhide it should be! EXTRA:D

Respect for taking on the mantle! Speaking from experience, definitely get it running properly again and drive it a bit first. A zed in pieces will be no fun this summer.

Hate that cowhide!
When the previous owner told me it had that I thought maybe it was installed in the 70’s. Boy was I wrong!
Who puts a 70’s porno style headliner into a Z?
Especially in 2018!

I agree with Rob, have the immediate work done and use it. Might as well looks as if we are in for a nice summer! Get whatever other work done over the winter period.

We are all glad you joined and look forward to seeing the journey you make with the car.

I have to agree with the others. Do the important work to get it drivable and enjoy it for at least the summer. You will then have more enthusiasm to get it back on the road once its been stripped.

Welcome chap! And as said already, we love you already for joining our Z family!

I have a new slogan for your upcoming project - MODGA (Make Our DIL Great Again)!

Inspire of the longest thread in the forum’s history and all that came to pass, we all have one objective, that being to give you the best possible advice / experience and help you enjoy your new toy!

Ask anything and everything.

You’ve been given the best advice already: namely to get to know the car and what is required before you being - oh and that cow hide!!!! [emoji849][emoji13]

Getting the carbs set up is actually less complex than you think - just needs a synch tool, a screw driver, a learning curve and some patience. As for rebuilding them, it depends on what the issue is. If the throttle shaft bearings are leaking then just do yourself a favour and buy ZTherapy carbs at some point (one of the best things I ever did to the Z). If it’s just a matter of floats and gaskets then it’s worth a play. Even old carbs as I had can be made to run to a good spirited drivable standard - I can’t imagine they are completely dead! They really aren’t that complex.

Can’t recall the issues with the gearbox but in my experience of cars, transmission fluid change with decent gear oil hides a multitude of sins and improves things in general. That may be a good short term action until you identify what you want to do next with it and where it sits in your priorities once you get to know the car.

A new Clutch master cyl IIRC could improve the car again - can be had at RockAuto for pennies.

Then give her a good service with some fresh 20w50 oil, new plugs and points (I think she’s still on points) and get some miles on. That engine needs to stretch her legs as she was standing for sometime and I’m not sure what miles she has had since being brought back to life. I found my old engine that had done 800miles in 7 years before I bought really improved with a couple of thousand miles (albeit drinking a fair bit of oil - but she went like stink and had a table top mountain torque curve)!

Finally, that cow died in vain, kill it again! Make it suffer! Kill it dead! Properly this time. Post photos of her going up in flames!!

Hi Hulk, welcome and congrats. Not many notorious Zs out there aside from racers but you have one.:)

I swim against the tide and reading between the lines, there are just too many big issues for you to get this happily on the road to enjoy it reliably so do what you have to, take your time - have an aim in mind for the finished prodcut but do allow your imaginaition to run whilst the basic work is getting done with the ultimate aim of having the car exactly how you want it when it's finished (and not how you wanted it perhaps at the beginning)....if you get my point.

Start a rebuild thred on here in the relevant section and detail each build sector eg body, interior, brakes, suspensun, engine.....details etc

ps have you joined the club (m/ship fee) or just registered on the forum ?

Good luck.

So it was heading to you up the M1 (or was it 6?) when I saw it a couple of weeks ago.
Where are you based? It would be good to see if between us all we can get running for the summer. I find it hard to believe the carbs can be so bad they can't be made to run OK.

I’m based in Leeds, yes it was on the M1 a few weeks ago. Bringing the beast home lol. As I’ve said previously I have zero experience in fixing cars. Would love to bring it to Japfest this weekend under its own steam but unless someone local offers to look at it, that’s near impossible.

I have a finished project look in mind but to be honest it’s serious money and I need to make sure the body is good before I start with the goodies. I intended to join as a full member and start a specific build thread once the car is ready to go in for work

Hi,
Prior to purchasing the car we went for a very short drive so the transmission is ok. Tried to drive it off the transporter onto my drive which was fun! (steep)
I wouldn’t mind spending a little money so I could use it this summer before the strip down starts.
The cowhide is going on the front bonnet as a warning to others on how not to mods cars ;)

Boss-Hogg style with cowhorns ?EXTRA:D

It was the previous and perhaps also previous to him owner (s) that have said this - the reality might be more serious as if it was simple, wouldn't you fix it for the sale to avoid the price being beaten down ?
