Rear light surround paint colour

As the title, is there a paint code for the rear light surround, I'm assuming that it should be grey, not satin black, mines a 1972 if the colour changed due to year.

Also the rear spoiler, should that be the same grey or black/

Thanks
Matt

I've seen 'em black, and a darkish grey - just don't do it body colour! (esp yours!)

The dark grey ones look really good. I've seen a chrome one as well.

I'll draw round those mats for you as well Matt - not had the inclination to get out in the cold garage yet since last week but will try in the next day or so.

Well, I can't say that I've done it, but here is the formula in Wick Humble's book "HOW TO RESTORE YOUR DATSUN Z CAR". It's a darkish non glossy grey color

Ditzler Duracryl DDL 2862 Argent with quite a bit of suede additive.
1 pint DDL
200 units DX265
300 units DX 264
Thin 100-150% and spray fairly dry.
Regulate air pressure to the high side
Make sure you keep the paint mixed in the cup
Don't expect any gloss as it shouldn't have any
Unmask as soon as the paint has "flashed over" so you don't run into problems when you remove the tape.

I quite like the matt black/dark grey look, as most of the US car come in as. The black also goes well with matt black and silver plates.

Thought I would have a change and experiment with body colour panels. Personally I quit like it which is probably a good thing.

I thought it should be the same grey as the wheel trims, spoiler too I think, don't know a colour code though as I matched mine at work

Thanks for everyone's input, I ended up using Halfords plastic bumper Grey, didn't want to go with satin black as I'm going to be fitting a spoiler which will be in SB I think it looks ok.image.jpg

Matt, we experimented with several different shades of graphite color and settled with the Duple-color wheel paint HWP102 as mentioned prior, it was the most like original. Love the color you chose, looks great. Car is really coming along.

I read the reviews of the Halfords paint and people said it finished a bit brown, but that looks great. What is the finish like? Would it be suitable for the spoiler and grille too?

If you were looking for something a bit different....mine is gold! (As are the wheels!)

Depending on the day, I either hate it or embrace it.

Pretty sure I will go dark grey when I respray the car.

Here’s a tip - one of the closest, easily available colours to the original is BMW Anthracite (Anthrazit Metallic) 397. This works for the rear panels, spoiler, and ZG flares (if wanting to replicate original look). Original finish is a flat matt.

Ah, good info!

So was the original spoiler a flat grey like the rear panel?

Thread resurrection based on my current experiments. I've been working on ZG flares and the rear panel trims, having epoxy primed them all a while ago. I test sprayed a rear light trim and one arch with the BMW 397 Anthracite I mentioned above. While the right sort of depth/darkness of colour and a fine metallic, IMO, it has a strong blue tint to it that makes it unsuitable. It may be that earlier versions of that BMW Anthracite (some shades date to the 70s) were a bit different, but the more recent shade I used is not right.

I then returned to various forum discussions in the US about the colour, and one that had undergone side-by-side comparisons with NOS parts in original paint and come out well was Ford Dark Shadow Gray, code CX-7039. So I ordered a can of the Ford (USA) colour (there is a Ford Europe version too but this may be different) in a custom mix aerosol from Paints4U and have given it a spin. MUCH better. Similar colour, but without the obvious blue tint. I will be using this for the ZG flares, rear panels and rear spoiler on the project Z. From the can, it has a near perfect flat/matt finish, although it may still make sense to lacquer it with a 2K satin or matt clear.

Thread resurrection! Going to be getting round to this bit soon, so have been doing my research.

@richiep - can I just call Paints4U (or Colourtone?) and ask for 'Ford Dark Shadow Gray, code CX-7039 - USA version' then?
