Black and White Number Plates

I like the plates on my silver car but still not sure how legal they actually are. I have been followed by the police and even chatted to a copper about the car once. He had a grin on his face when he looked at the front plate.

100 messages later. I'm still none the wiser.

I'm guessing since this thread started in 2015, a fair bit of time has passed for those 'stretching the law' [emoji3]

What's the general consensus?

Really not keen on that overhang in the rear and it will be time to make the plates soon-ish.

My 6.5 inch black and silver plate has no overhang (see earlier in the thread). Like you I don't like that overhang look. Jonbills 7 inch version of yellow plates also has no overhang. I think those is your options.

In my experience the police have zero interest in the car number plates of some 50+ man driving about in a 50 year old motor.

I have known a committee member on here get 'pulled up' for a small (motorbike font) front number plate.

I looked at all the options for ages ... and ages ... the Jap import size is a weird one. In the end I just went with yellow and black perspex plates. I'll have them for a bit and then get some others down the line just to be able to change them every now and then.

The font is the old squarer font, I did get a bit anal about the whole thing with my old car and ended up making my own in the end - mad.

I wouldn't worry about it, just go with one that looks right, metal one's like to look more correct.

For the front, i'm going to use a stick on one on the curve under the front valance. Or not at all. Its technically less of an issue not to have a plate on it.

Just looking for some plates for the new one. I've ordered the black and white pressed rear plate in 8" x 6" but struggling to find where I get the front plate from. Any suggestions? The size is 12" x 3" and called "Italian classic car sized".

Thanks.
Just found the place I order from and it's PFC (plates for cars) which I think is the same company that you linked to. Yes, they are not cheap as I only need the front plate.

I have just ordered the rear on ebay but this time as I cant find where I last got them. I have a feeling I'm not going to the happy with them as they are on 2 lines and the letters may be just too small. The ebay picture looks good but that may not be what turns up. I think I may of got the last plates from craigs plates of state plates in Ireland.

Afternoon Chaps,

Hope you're all having a very pleasant weekend.

Got the V5 though, now its just the plates and I can finally go for a drive.

Catching up on the trail a US vehicle ('75 280z), without overhang.

I'll be needing...

----Rear
Length
13"/330mm

Height
6.5"/165mm
7"/178mm

--- Front???
I'm not with the vehicle. Any idea on the size of the front? It's to the side of the front standard much loved bumpers?

Any recommendations to order black metal ones?

Thanks in advance

Here's a couple of pics.
First is 330x165 with the proper font size for imports that are allowed that size.

2nd is 330x202 with full size UK letters, cut down to 330x178.

I can't find anyone willing to make a plate with 330x178 with full size letters, but I think it's what would be best.

I think those W reg letters just look visually 'too big' ... probably because they're that much closer to the edge of the plate. The N-reg plate, is that the smaller height version of the latest font they used on new cars - ie slightly condensed compared to the old, wider squarer font?

Dunno [emoji849]. It was the current font for imports a couple of years ago when I bought the plate. I agree neither are perfect but I like bigger rather than smaller.
330x178 I think is the right plate size and what we really need I suppose is a maker who's prepared to experiment with font sizes.
Hmm.

To me, it's a better size (of digit). The maker I went to gave a choice of size AND font - mine ended up like this. These digits are 73mm high (and wider)

Not sure if anyone posted this, but this DVLA page says any historic tax car can display silver and black plates. I have ordered a US size rear for my 280z, technically they didn't realise it in the EU, so it should be fine to have on the back. Haven't ordered the front yet as haven't worked out how I will mount it, now that I have taken the original bumper off.
I ordered mine from http://www.chestnut-registrations.co.uk/vintageplates.aspx they sell historic plates to anything pre 78.

I'd be interested to see what that looks like.
