Looking good. Remind me again, what's the colour going to be? The nest time you do all this of course, it'll be nice fresh paint (scary) ...

Popped round to see Andy's progress recently (he lives down the road) the quality of work that he has carried out is to a very high standard and reflects his intent to complete his restoration to the highest quality, excellent work mate looks even better in the flesh, keep the updates coming

I’m still finishing the last bits of body work off, took ages to get a solid tailgate and roof panel over from the states, they’re just away for dipping and coating and once the roof is welded n bonded back on that sees the body ready for paint.
I’ve just had all the fasteners and gold stuff replated down in Birmingham. £20 for a bucketful, amazingly cheap and fast turnnround. Reeves Metal finishing if anyone needs a recommended company, I did have to strip paint but not rust prior to sending it to them.

FINISHED! Bodyshell is finally ready for paint. It’s taken 18months of evenings to get to this point and I’ve learned a hell of a lot along the way!
Last major job was fixing in the new roof panel which was bonded and spot welded, the new panel adhesives are awesome, u can weld like thro whilst wet and it seam seals as you go.

That looks fantastic. Panel gaps are superb, I've never seen a bonnet/wing/headlight nacelle to fit like that!

I don’t do paint myself so it’s onto the engine, ive got an interesting build planned on an l28, so as soon as the shell is gone I’ll acid dip the whole engine and get stuck in.
I’ve been dead keen to get going with this as I like building motors, but couldn’t start until the shell was gone. I’ll post pics along the way...

Time for an update, with the shell gone it’s time to get oily.
I’ve got an l28 with the aim an interesting build, I already have an ld28 crank and have just got a Schneider cam kit off Franky so it’s really a matter of spending more money and acquiring the right bits!
This weekend with the help of my 11yr old son Ben we, finished stripping the block, removed core plugs, following the ‘How to tune your Datsun’ I’ve drilled and tapped the oil galleries to enable thorough flushing, these will have 3/8bsp plugs fitted. The head oil supply orifice has been opened up from 2mm to 3mm to better oil the large cam. This afternoon has been spent with the Die Grinder removing all casting flash and debris from within the block, again as advised by the tuning book. I’ll get the block off for dipping later this week.

Quick update...

Block and head currently away for cleaning so I’ve cracked on with a few simple clean up n restore jobs such as the fan blower motor.
The car had been badly ‘restored’ about 10yrs ago and there is bodyshop muck all over the bits n pieces that are usually hidden from show so I’ve been cleaning, stripping, resealing and spraying bits n pieces. Heater blower and heater assembly have been top of the list.

Finished the S14 gearbox conversion today, as mentioned in the ‘S14 gearbox for sale’ thread the machining was trickier than I imagined. Anyway whilst in bits I gave it a good flush with brake cleaner, it was reassuring to find no metal stuck to the drain magnet. I cleaned the cases with a jet washer and sand blast attachment, surprisingly effective and only used a bucket of sand. It’s back together and seems to work well, the relocated reverse switch also performs fine. Need to get a quick shift kit ordered next.

Went to check on progress on the bodywork today, slow and steady, but as I’ve still got the engine to progress I’m not in a great rush. Front end and underside is pretty much done, rear 1/4s underway at present, the skim of filler on the rear is over the patches I put in on the us spec rear 1/4s I used (over the side marker lights holes). Cannot wait to start bolting bits on though.

Time for an update.... Engine build started!!! It’s taken an age to get pistons and rods sorted but they’ve been here about 4 weeks now, in which time the block has been away to be skimmed and bored to suit the 88.5mm JE pistons. At the same time the LD28 crank was offset ground to increase stroke to 85mm. 138mm Eagle conrods will be installed these are Toyota 3sgte derived.
I started a mock build this afternoon with the intention of finding deck height etc, but installing core and oil gallery plugs followed by gapping the piston rings took and age.
Beware JE piston rings are supplied o/size and will require gapping!
