I’d be interested to see if that is a suretrac, never came standard in the LSD Subaru did it? You have any pictures inside of yours? I have 2 spare LSD 3.9’s R180’s but believe they are both plated.

I believe mine is running a suretrac Subaru LSD, that's what it was sold to me as by a Subaru specialist from Ireland, I believe I'm right in saying all of the 04/05 3.9 LSD's from the Subaru Sti were suretrac. Not got anything to compare it to however it does make for a lot of fun to drive now!

I may have a picture of the inside of mine somewhere if you're interested...

Top picture is plated a diff , (needs proper LSD oil in it ), if you look through the hole in the casing you can see the plates

This is a Suretrac not much to see though really , but you can tell by the type of housing , and uses normal gearbox oil , DSC_1058.JPG

Some JDM cars had the Suretrac fitted as standard ( WRX STi and the RA spec) , but depends on year.

Going by the gearbox he also has for sale that diff is from a JDM Impreza WRX STi or STi RA from 2001-2002

Put some pictures up and I will try and work out which it is , do you know if its got HF or HK part number ?

Not all were Surtrac in 04/05 could be a plated they did both in a 3.9 depending on market

I’ve got an sti Scooby and I didn’t think the diff was different to the Jdm model,I know the engines in the jdm are different,

I'm still on the lookout for a "reasonably priced" scooby R180 3.9 lsd. Torque biasing would be great but a plate will do.

Jon there is a guy that breaks scoobies in the midlands think I pinged over his number to you, when you say biasing do you mean the diff from a dccd sti as not all the sti have the dccd, mine has you can give it a spin if you want it’s quite a weird feeling, where I live I’ve got the perfect roads and you can take that windscreen away

My wrx wagon doesn’t have the dccd as they didn’t import the wagon sti to uk ,you can get a bigeye wagon sti import but more rare than a 260 z I reckon over here

You sound like gaskin :)

65.6 is 3000rpm 87.4 is 4000 rpm (4.44 diff ratio)

74.6 is 3000rpm 99.5 is 4000 rpm (3.9 diff ratio)

You must be running taller tyres than me then , With my 4.11 I'm just under 4k @ around 70mph but I need to check with a sat nav, and also change out the speedo drive cog for the right one ,

Just dug through and found my photos of when I cracked mine open to check the ratio:

From your photos it looks to be a suretrac which is what I thought but I couldn't tell the difference myself. I just know is the 3.9 which keeps my revs at about 3.4k for 70mph cruising and makes roundabouts a lot more fun :)

I'd be curious to hear more, no idea what the difference between the two or advantages or disadvantages etc....

I think, but not 100%, that the suretrac is a torque biasing type such as the quaife. Therefore doesn’t wears so bother to replace or adjust. The other type has clutch plates that do wear and will need adjusting.

I have one of each I think need to check. I don’t think 450 is unreasonable, if you buy a quaiffe it’ll cost a lot more.

I think thats about the bottom going rate. They're not getting any cheaper. They're also so much newer.

I do like the idea of the r160 lsd. The 510 boys run big torque through them with zero issues. I'm guessing its the spider gears thats the weak point anyway, which LSD's don't suffer with.
