What did you do to your Z this week?

I went for a little drive in mine. They're quite nice these Z things aren't they?
And afterwards it went in the garage for the first time in a month or so. Its been languishing in the garden while I've been doing an engine swap on an mr2.

Interesting garden you have there Jon, everything seems to be leaning.

Nothing so exciting I'm afraid Mark. Typical 1zz oil burner with enormous valve clearances swapped for a fresh 1zz I built over the summer.
I did have the added excitement of swapping in an LSD since its actually an MR-S.
Just a bit of summer fun. God knows why I've got two. [emoji23]

 Maybe next time, they really bring the mk3 alive!

Cracking little cars though, I've always favoured the Mk2 but the Mk3 really does handle nicely. Needs a bit of a bodykit with some skirts to look spot on imo.

Finally, all ports done on the big port N42. Now ready for valve guides to be fitted, and seats cut. Then I can cc the chambers and map out for shaping. And cc the intake ports to even out any volume discrepancies.

In the meantime, moving on to sorting the new Harada manifold to fit to the FairladyZ ‘s engine, along with a switch to cable throttle and addition of the cold air feed.

Been playing with the ratty silver car over the weekend. I've removed all the fuel injection to put the car back to standard for with SU's. I know It won't run anywhere near as nice but I need the FI for the other silver car that will be running a 3.0.

Nice work Richie. Are you sticking with carbs on this one? or polishing the inlets for FI.

It's going to be ITBs with the intakes as they are at 120-180 grit finish (which is pretty smooth as is). Having read into it a bit more, mirror polished intakes are not recommended unless its some form of direct injection where the injector is spraying straight into the combustion chamber and the port is only handling air flow. Using ITBs and other forms of FI or carbs, where the fuel-air mixture is travelling to the chamber through manifold and port, requires some degree of surface roughness to aid mixing.

Overall, this head is being prepared based on a couple of Japanese books on L-series engine tuning and all the measurements, surface finish notes, etc., contained within them. Luckily they are very photo and data-heavy given the limitations of my Japanese!

Popped down to FOURWAYS ENGINEERING in Borough Green, Kent today to see progress on my 1972 Fairlady 240ZG's body/paint progress. Really, really happy with progress so far and the attention to detail is much appreciated.

Body colour is back to the factory original #904 'Grand Prix White' (Fairlady 240ZG only came in three colours from the factory) and I'm relieved that it is coming out the correct, slightly off-white, shade and doesn't look like a giant fridge...

Interestingly, I counted no less than 8 other S30-series Zs currently being worked on at Fourways today. There's always a good through-put of Zs there and I see new (to me) ones whenever I visit. Surely one of - if not the - busiest specialists for these cars in the UK?

Which book is that? Great work.

Colour looks great Alan. Is the spare wheel well "cover" a factory option or one that was adopted by certain zeds?

Another fun delivery from Japan just now, soon to be taking up residence in my Fairlady Z - genuine Datsun Compe steering wheel. Used and not perfect with some patina, but with a bit of cleaning and nourishment of the rim it should look pretty damn good. Got it for stupid cheap for one of these wheels.

I went to visit the body shop today where the 280Z is being re-fitted with all the panels and I should be getting it back in a couple of days.
She's dusty but starting to take shape now!
I'll have to wait and see what the ride height is like after everything has been fitted (still have to fit the gearbox, prop shaft, interior, side windows, etc, etc).
Hopefully, it should settle at a decent height.

It's a replica of the factory 432-R spare wheel well delete panel (the 432-R used a 100 litre fuel tank, so no space for the spare wheel well) which was also used by the works 240Z rally cars and some of the works 240ZR race cars.

I'm using it because I shall be fitting a non-stock fuel tank/cell, and it gives me a lot more scope with the shape of that.

Continued with my swap from fuel injection to Su's and dizzy on my silver rat look car. Went to the workshop tonight and hooked up my AFR stuff to tweak the carbs a little. got it running pretty close to my target AFR of 14.7. Just need to go for a drive and see what I get on load and cruising.

I'll stick a vid up soon.
