What did you do to your Z this week?

The rods will get checked over before use. For the most part, they've been used without issue if you look at feedback around the net though. If I recall, pmac and Steve K have used them in engine builds they've done and been happy enough with them.

ITBs - I'm planning on being a guinea pig and trying the Chinese FAJS ones out. They are essentially copies of the Jenveys. FAJS are a pretty decent operation though from what I understand. They are the manufacturer for EMPI carbs. They also make a range of Weber copies that can use Weber parts. I read an interesting thread on another forum recently where an FAJS IDF carb was bench-tested next to a genuine Weber and the FAJS actually outperformed it. So we will see.

TBH, the complete kit now available from Jenvey for Zs just seems a ridiculous price to me. I'd rather piece things together myself and try something different. Plus, budget needs to be directed into getting the shell treated, modded, and painted. That's the main priority for next year - have a finished rolling shell by the end of the summer, with summer 2020 as target for completion of the car.

Ordering from Japan: it's reached the point where I think its better than ordering from the states TBH. The performance parts are better, prices competitive, and ordering from RHDJapan/BidJDM allows for combined shipping. They will store your parts for up to 56 days, so you can stockpile and then have a consignment sent. The shipping prices via courier are actually way more sensible than the ludicrous USPS international rates that many of the US sellers use.

I also think hte Jenvey is well over priced. The Makes the OER kit with manifold look like a bargain in relation.

Also on ITBs: another interesting option to me is using RB26DETT ITBs. There is a manifold available in Japan - I'll have to dig out the link - that is designed for L-series heads and looks like a typical triple manifold, but it features injector bosses at the head flange to squirt into the factory injector notches of the N42/P90 etc. The other flange is designed for the RB26 throttle bodies, making them a bolt-on solution. It's about £800, so not cheap, but a set of RB26 ITBs can be had for under £250, so swings and roundabouts.

Yes - agree on the OERs. Complete kit with ITBs, manifold, linkages, fuel rails, TPS, trumpets for £1300 plus post. Absolute no brainer IMO. In fact - WhyTF didn't I consider them?... :O

Actually, I know why: I was a little concerned that the OER fuel rails are positioned in a way that might interfere with the cold air box I'll be running. Not insurmountable though.

They look cool also!

Hmm not a fan of the OER fuel rails or manifold but it is significantly cheaper. I asked for discount at Jenvey to which I got a swift no...

Thankfully, DHL got their shat together and found my missing Harada manifold, so now I’m good to go, both with making changes to the Fairlady Z’s intake setup and having one ready for Dixie. Both will be port-matched and polished, the latter requiring a good dose of hogging out given the 40mm intake ports on that N42 for the stroker.

Get some pics up of the new manifold with cable when you get it, nothing online!

See the photos on the previous page of this thread! The new one is identical. I’ve got a universal Venhill cable that I will solder a ball end onto that will connect to the factory ball on the pedal. I’m going to get a stepped, threaded washer made to locate it neatly and tightly through the bulkhead hole to the pedal. No drilling, brackets, or modifications to shell or parts required.

The fact that the manifold comes with a built in bracket and rotator arm for cable allowing both cable and rod linkage setups is rather useful.

Well that moved quickly!
My rods were maxspeeding with an S when I got them but it looks like they've rebranded to S less.
Maxspeedingrods.com redirects to maxpeedingrods.com.

Anyway, I've revved mine well past 8k many times with 0.55mm piston to head clearance so I guess it depends what you mean by "not rev them too high". Some of those sexy Japanese builds go up past 10k rpm.

I like the sound of this solution !

Just a heads Richie , When I spoke to my Dyno guy he had nothing good to say about the FAJS copy Webers as he had just had a car in with a set and couldn't tune them properly, But Weber castings are a complicated bit of kit . ITB's are a lot more simple and less to get wrong , so hopefully will be good .

In other news I have started the mock up of the front carbon strut brace and have made some prototype brackets out of ally to get sizes right , next step is the real steel ones

I guess we will see. As you say, ITBs are much simpler than carbs. Quality issues can only really crop up in machining and things like the butterfly and spindle assemblies.

Apparently, the FAJS Weber copies are very popular in Sweden for some reason; lots of resto-mod Volvos running them!

Kool, I will do some some more reading about them , if you find a link for the manifold can you post it up or send me a PM would like to have a look

The manifold is made by Proshop Nakagawa and is Y88000 - £620. Design is pretty similar to the Harada, but adapted for injectors, fuel rail, and the RB26 ITBs. It’s on this page, along with a bunch of other cool stuff:

Fancy a new manifold engineering project? I’d be up for some collaboration there!

I bought the ZX an early Christmas present, a nice new set of seat covers from the ZStore. Got fed up of waiting for the upholsterer who was (never) going to recover the seats.

They are really good quality and all the internal material fixing are in the right places to wire them to the seat frames.

I went for a little drive in mine. They're quite nice these Z things aren't they?
And afterwards it went in the garage for the first time in a month or so. Its been languishing in the garden while I've been doing an engine swap on an mr2.

Bits of the Jigsaw before the car gets back.

FYI, Mr Mori at Kameari is great to deal with. Answers questions quickly, offers advice, actually very sensible prices when you look around also.

No jobs just drove both yesterday.

I sometimes wonder why I bother with old cars and think perhaps it's time to move on, however after a drive I have a big grin on my face and it reminds me.
