Anyone got any cars coming across from the US?

Just like the 5% vat that most of us get away with. We are making an illegal declaration and hoping no one checks. One day they will check.

Tell me more? I thought this was completely legitimate for all fairly standard classic cars of this age....

It technically has to be stock or as near as stock as reasonably practical to be counted as the 5% duty car. Any modifications should make it 20%

My car has been sitting in a container for 2 weeks in California.... I think they are waiting for a second car before they ship it. shipping with Rinkens

I've been THOROUGHLY disappointed with Rinkens. It's taken them 6 months to get my 2nd Datsun shipped over, and they FORGOT to ship a large crate at the same time - I had paid extra for special container shipping and my crate is STILL in the US warehouse - it's been almost exactly a year since I transferred them the funds to initially ship. It's a big shame as my first car (the blue one) came over with very little issues

Yes, I thought the BTI ruling of 5% import duty is completely legitimate. Not sure what johnymd thinks he is mis-declaring ... !

Seems we are in agreement, standard or near stock cars are totally legitimate (which would cover most imports). The likes of Jays RB monster would fall under a different cetegory if someone paid close attention but I'd certainly leave it to the shippers descretion and take the 5%...

Real shame to hear that, seems they're fine when things are plain sailing and then useless when things go wrong from several members expiriences including my own! They seem to be picking a up a rep for forgetting things including cars! :banghead:

You have peaked my interest though, '2nd Datsun' Spill the details?!

Cars need to be complete and original as far as I am aware and should not have additional parts included inside the car to qualify for the 5% dispensation. If I imported a rolling shell and included extra panels inside then this would not qualify for special dispensation and if stopped would be subject to full VAT and duty. You can not smuggle goods into the UK legally. Legally they should all be declared on the manifest. The only zeds that have room for extra panels or large parts are incomplete cars so do not qualify for special dispensation. If you were importing a complete and original zed then you may not want extra large parts inside the car.

Now just to be clear. I'm not saying I wouldn't allow other peoples parts to come over in my cars as I have done this on many occasions and will probably still do this but I am fully aware of the risks.

So the update is that the car will be due mid-Jan now in the UK
Is it really bad that you can check the ships progress daily... it's not on the boat and I feel like a 6-year-old waiting for his first bike

I've had a few of mine delayed and often spoke to them (don't do email) about the progress. It can be frustrating but there is nothing you can do about it. They only lost one of my cars and even that one was eventually found although it did take them a long while to ship it again.

it is worse as "my" mechanic has purchased a 240Z I saw after he purchased it in California. He started shipping it a week later than me but his is on a boat at the Panama Canal he just told me. He is lurking but won't post anything until his car lands....
