Has yours got the 'new to this game' early style factory welding on the front end? I've got MIG wire sticking out in several places...

Alan - you shock me - this was factory work ?

Is your car remaining LHD on that chassis number ?

Yes that's all Nissan Shatai Hiratsuka factory welding. It seems that a lot of the cars made in the first few months of production were like that. It's very distinctive. One for the Rivet Counter type beards.

Yes, it will remain LHD and (of course) on that chassis number, but I will be doing the works LHD handbrake lever switch (which is quite complicated).

With bumper over-riders.....a test-car and future mule or test to destruction ? European, African or Australian testing please ? I'd have said Aussi from the lower indicators but didn't they not have wing repeaters ?

Sorry for the hijack.

Yes, over-riders. Also a full 6-point cage (I'll be sticking with works 4-point). It's actually a super lightweight PZR-bodied, LHD and LR24-engined, 918 Orange and badged up as a 'Fairlady Z'.

It's pictured during testing in Japan, near Mount Asama up in Nagano prefecture. Don't think this test car ever actually left Japan.

One of many, Sean. They were already testing/data gathering with an 'interesting' Z on the Monte Carlo Rallye course (after the 1970 event had finished) at the end of January 1970...

'LR24' engine is a factory race version of the L24 engine. Don't ask me to give you a spec list on this thread...!

Yeah, the Japanese were great exponents of the bodge or that'll do,or have a go at that mate. Difference was it was never accepted as the norm, always could be and would be improved.

Can't see why testing was at MC when Japan must have plenty of similar roads.

They were doing plenty of testing in Japan. The advantage of doing some testing/data gathering just after the '70 Monte was that they were on the actual roads they would be competing on for the 1971 event, in the same weather conditions, and with the key crew members present (especially Rauno Aaltonen). A lot of the testing was tyre-focused, in conjunction with Dunlop Japan.

Getting 5th overall in 1971 and 3rd overall in 1972 was fairly miraculous for a front-engined, rear-drive car. They were only beaten by cars with their engines over their driven wheels - which was a big advantage in such conditions.

Thanks Alan - they took competition seriously - must have been a hefty budget !

Pete - absolutely, never rest upon your laurels.

Yes, I'll be drilling out the spotwelds. Have done it on two other 'shells before this one, so starting to get the hang of it now.

I'm in North London.

I haven't posted many photos, if any. This car has been somewhat on the backburner whilst I have a couple of other projects on the go, but I've got it back on the rotisserie now and started doing this and that. I've got some rare and unusual period parts for it, and they are no good sitting in the loft or hanging on the wall so I should get on with it. Luckily there's not any rot in the 'shell. It's very, very good in that respect.

Thanks

Your shell looks to be in perfect condition, I’ve not even in the same country as my car yet but I’ll keep you updated when I get to that bit.

I remember finding similar things on my z32 when I restored that, I think they cam out of the same factory (22 years apart)

I’ll have to dig out some pics of the z32 for those who like them, just need to figure out an image hosting site.
