My current dilemma..... 240z VS 911

As the 240z is up for sale, I will soon be faced with the dilemma of what to buy next :) 911 964 is a definite possibility, but of course so is a Z (240, 260, 280) but it will be LHD.

I know price point is a major issue with the Porsche and that may be the final decision maker, but until then its still open for discussion :D

Anyways, in my search, I found this...

Why sell the 240Z to get another?

Why do you want left hand drive?

Long story, but the car is being sold as ex and I have now split and we need to sell in order finalise the split.

LHD now, because I am living in France and LHD is cheaper!

Life should be simple !

Bloke at work yesterday, 45yrs old, slumped over the wheel of his lorry at 07:15 whilst waiting to be loaded - heart-attack...game over.

I hate that white carbuncle - at least do a tasteful Z.

All makes sense now, Good luck.

Could you buy the 50% share of your current Z and save having to risk a new one?

I was looking at buying a classic 911 to replace the 996 Turbo I have so I've got a fairly good idea of comparisons. What is it you're after?

A 964 drives completely different to a Z, so if you're after something light and nimble then you'll need to go older - ideally an 87-89 3.2 Carrera. If you want something that's a little more comfortable, reliable and advanced but still maintaining a raw drive then the 964 ticks a lot of the boxes.

One thing to keep in mind that you're likely to have to budget a minimum of £200-400/month on maintenance and repairs. I'm not sure about Z's but they certainly feel a lot cheaper to keep driving.

Don't know what to make of that Porsche really. Looks fine from a quick glance, but read the description - fair enough, the guy is being very honest but it looks like a bit of a money-pit bodywise down the line to get any better. Maybe that's all you get for £40k now ...

And that sums it really, no need to waste time, just do what you want and be happy!!

Sh!t situation, but its for the better.... Thanks!!!

Seen that one.... watching it closely!

Perhaps.... thats my worry with not knowing them. However, at least I know what I am in for with the Z :)

Thanks for the info..... sadly, what I want is that nimble light feel, but with a bit of comfort and reliability. The 964 is pretty close to what I want I think, but I dont want a moneypit either.... Thats a largish budget per month just to keep it running! Doubt the Z is anything like that.....

The idea is that I will have a "daily" car, which I wont use daily but more for track, longer drives, etc which is shaping up to be a BMW z3 Coupe 2.8l (I am looking at the M sport, but the additional money and classic status dont really work for me..... wouldnt want to wreck it if its a classic.... also read a lot of reviews that say dont bother trying to drive the M in the wet). And then the 911 or Z as the pure "FUN" car, capable on the track, but also brilliant for the road where I am living now (South of France).

I sold my mint 993 (which is very close to a 964) as the Porsche market is on its arse imo. It went to Hong Kong for good money but that was the only serious lead I had. It was a great drive and i do miss it, even with a 620bhp rwd car sitting in its place.

Aside from this, I still have my 240z and plan for it to go no where.....feels so much more exclusive, loved by genuine enthusiasts and never outshined at shows. With Porsche’s there are sooooo many, and you’ll always want the more desirable one than the one you have.

Yep - just go to Le Mans Classic and park up in the +900 of them......or come on our stand with 30ish !

Tim - that 'no-rubber' look is 100% JDM so not costs-cut, unfinished but a deliberate attempt to replicate in-period cars from Japan.

993 prices have gone mental. 7 years ago, 20k got you an amazing one, low mileage, that’s now about £70k for the same thing. Given the numbers I can’t see the value.

It looks like s30 prices are levelling off which is also good news.
