Mark, do you want it to be returned to the colour it left the factory or if it's different the colours it was raced in? If factory are there any records re chassis number - colour - Albrecht?

Secondly Sean and Steve you are mentioned in the mag article that you posted Steve, can you guys remember the car and colour?

Also Dave Jarman may be able to help?

Before any of this I would think it important to establish if it is the same shell and the mechanical spec of the car compared to when it was raced.

Can't remember the car but thought it was originally LHD. Will look through my photos but should be in a club mag somewhere.

I'm not sure Dave will want to help - maybe I can find en email address for Andy himself though......I always did have a soft-spot for the Cathy he mentioned.

Hi all, and thanks for all the friendly advice and comments. Much appreciated! Sorry for my 24h absence, been a busy day!

I’ve learned quite a bit in that time :)

I knew about the Andy Stanford part of its history including the - ahem - patina added over the years through an active racing life! Some records of that were supplied with the car. But I’m missing any race history from 1979 through 1990 so would be grateful if anyone has anything?

I’m now clear it is a “s2” car and all the important tells are consistent. It has presumably had (at least one) replacement hatch at some point from an older car. No biggie. I can’t read the vin but there are so many layers of paint I’m not surprised.

It is cream, it looks smart to me too (other than the rear tyres!) though it has had quite a quick paint job and I’m a bit OCD, even with my race cars. So I plan to give it some tlc and if I’m going to that trouble I was considering whether or not to revert to original colour., or maybe an earlier race livery, if I see something I like. It has been put back to a road car but I’m going to reverse that!

Regarding those tyres, the wheels are 15” revolutions. Anyone recommend what size tyres it should wear, please, and which brand is favoured for track use?

Cheers
Mark

Mark, this is a great looking car and it could well have a racing history - in fact it was sold on that. I can understand you wanting to find out for interest and only you can decide whether to return the car to it's former paint-job etc.

Surely though the identity of the shell is crucial to you? I'm guessing other members will be thinking the same and have commented in the posts above. With the greatest respect is there anything other than the Reg number that you can prove was the car you have bought? A lot was made in the description about the car being desirable because it was a genuine RHD car - that too is something I'd want to check-out. You said yourself that there can't be many early UK RHD cars left. Those carbs are a common fitment in the USA. All I'm saying is satisfy yourself with the integrity before worrying about colour or tyres. Can the records provided with the car help?

From the pictures and 'write-up' this appears to be a good car and I was interested when it was on ebay (it was situated in Derby near to me) I asked the seller about viewing but the bids went past what I was hoping to pay.

Well the VIN would be a good start but not exhaustive as we know (bulkheads etc).

If the VIN 'checks-out' and you have records of that reg with that VIN from 'way back' then you are halfway there.

Exactly where on the bulkhead should the shell VIN be, please? I understand it to be somewhere near or above the brake servo but don’t want to strip too much paint yet... anyone post a picture of theirs? Thanks guys!

I don't know how you can't even see the approx outline under the paint? You're right on the location.

Check both sides of the bulkhead. Also is there an identification plate on the strut turret? These can get left off after a respray though.

The engine number is on the block below the number 6 spark plug. Is it an L24, 26 or 28?

Thanks - yeah I have the (correct) detachable vin plate and the engine number (which is an L24, as it should be). Will get some paint stripper on the bulkhead tomorrow...
