I never realised there were so few early UK cars with this one being a late car and still having a sub 1k vin number. Were early (pre vented quarters) cars actually supplied to the UK?

Jon Newlyn's is the early type I think:

Pay attention to what Alan (Albrecht) says above as much of the discussion before that is confused tbh. The shell and features (vented rear quarters, the early centre console, etc.) are completely consistent with an early-mid-71 car. The only thing that obviously isn’t is the replacement tailgate which is a 1970-style. So, not a biggie if you want to track down a correct non-vented replacement.

Beyond that, isn’t the essential history/story of this car that it was an HSCC racer for much of its used life? Surely completely wiping that out by attempting to return it to standard takes away from the car a bit? Part of the appeal of Zs historically in the U.K. has been their personalisation and modification (before their values rose and people started applying investment and originality-focussed thinking common in other classic marques).

However, a couple of tips if looking for original colour: even with complete resprays, there are certain areas that get missed. The bracket that the strut for the rear hatch attaches to on the left quarter panel just inside the opening is two piece. Undo the bolts that hold the outer piece of that bracket onto the inner spot welded piece (stick a plank in to keep the hatch from dropping on your head!). It is highly likely that the mating surfaces of that bracket will have original factory overspray on them that will give you the info you are looking for.

With respect Rob - the car has already been considerably modified from when it was running with Andy so what is there to lose ?

In the original advert on eBay there is a picture of the car racing. It does not appear to be a 'Series 1' shell....

Blimey - you have good eyes Rob - how can you tell that from the photo ?

As I've pointed out, the car that left the factory with the chassis number 'HS30-00967' would never have been a so-called 'Series 1' type solid, un-vented quarter/vented tailgate car anyway.

If (and so far it's a big if...) the car has had its identity switched onto another bodyshell (you can't "re-shell" these cars) then it would appear to have been switched onto a bodyshell of a similar manufacturing period.

So early, they forgot the front wing repeaters but kindly added over-riders and split-lens under-bumper indicators - very thoughtful.

MBP is a typical 1970 production Australian market car. Those details are all correct. Nissan didn't "forget" anything.

...and to quote Walter Bagehot:

"We must not let daylight in upon the magic."
Well, I reckon someone left the sunroof open 'cos it's so blatent - never mind, watch my left hand now.....

Ps I learnt irony myself in the army - flattens most things even boot tips (oh, sorry that was a heated spoon).

TBH, a little surprised to hear that you're thinking of a strip down and respray. Looked decent to me, but at the end of the day we all do what suits us best and that's a huge part of Z ownership. Thus good luck with all, and enjoy...
