Do you need a valid MOT to...

...register a fresh import with DVLA ( to allow them to issue UK number plates) ?

Upto the recent changes in May this year, I was of the opinion that to get DVLA to issue UK plates, one needed a valid MOT and insurance cover.

However since the changes in May, I have read online where folk have managed to register their cars without needing a MOT certificate. ( only overseas log book Nova certicate, insurance cover needed)

Anyone here who has recently registered a car without MOT? :coolgleam:

A couple have - johnnymd and Chris Vega I think. I have just sent my docs off (inc a V112 - MOT exemption) and they haven't rung up or come back yet - probably at the bottom of someone's IN tray though ... :)

Of course it is tax exempt as well so I'm not sure when they send me back details of my reg no. whether the car will be taxed - I presume not - as I could want to SORN it ...

Once it has a reg though, you MUST either tax it (free, if it qualifies) OR SORN it - there's no inbetween, I did send in a print out of my insurance though as well. And the damned US title - which you don't get back. Take a copy.

That's how I understand the rules at present.

I can confirm, having received my v5 yesterday for the 240z series 1 I just imported, that an mot, insurance and v112 are not required. I sent the new v555 form with US registration doc, copy of driving licence and check for £55. That’s it. I am still waiting for the 280z v5 so not sure if the v112 is required for this but I don’t see why. I have also never provided and vehicle dating letter that I’ve seen other people mention. I see no reason for this as the US title states the manufacturing date.

I will take a copy of a completed v555 and post it with this thread to help others with filing it in. It may be worthwhile collating this information and having it easily accessible from the home page.

I have just revcieved a couple of letters from the DVLA this morning. The first was the follow up letter you get once a v5c has been issued authorising you to get a number plate made. This was for the 240z.

The second was for the complete 280z. This letter informs me that the vehicle needs inspection prior to a registration number being supplied. It also says that the vehicle must be complete and in usable condition. I think these inspections a fairly common but may increase as they no longer require mot’s. so just be aware if you apply before your car is ready to use then you may need to be a little speedy in reassembling it. For the red car it is not a major issue as it won’t need much work.

Could be that you've been 'flagged' due to the number of cars you've registered?

Just rang and looks like it was the fact they read the vin as HL5 instead of HLS. That’s what they told me. Inspection is just to verify the car is complete and the vin is correct so all ok.

Inspection is carried out by SGS on behalf of DVLA.
I believe there is a contract to inspect around 3,000 imports a year and the chances of being selected for inspection are mostly random, although in any case where there is a doubt over the paperwork submitted, VIN discrepancies etc it is likely to be pulled up.

Inspection has become necessary due to an insurance fraud of £ multi-millions committed on imported pre-1960 cars which exploited a loophole in the registration system. The insurance industry put pressure on DVLA to act, obviously every import could not be inspected due to cost implications so a compromise agreement was made.

I have had 4 inspections over recent years, 2 of those were completely random, 2 were due to some doubt on paperwork (or perceived doubt by over-zealous DVLA clerks lol). As a percentage of my own imports that would run at around a 5% chance overall or 2.5% chance of random selection.

DVLA generally take around two weeks to reply with registration (if you are lucky) or rejection or request for inspection.

Mike - 2 weeks. When rang them I was told it took 10 working days and that’s exactly how long it took.

Thats good news that its not them just keeping track of how many being registered where etc.

Good news; this ^ is exactly what I was looking for. Real life experiences.

I look forward to seeing a copy of the completed V555 as hinted above.

Also does the Nova clearance letter feature anywhere in the process ?

Yes ive just had the SGS inspection letter today. my car is complete but far from road worthy i will book it in for a test and let you all know what happens.
I'm hoping its an ID check.

Ron, it is just an I’d check. The car does need to have all its major parts though.

The nova clearance letter is only to let you know that duty has been paid and the car is on the nova system. You can just throw the letter in the bin once you have read it.

I’ll scan and post the v55/5 when I’m back in action. I’m on bed rest while I recover from surgery.
