Hello everyone,

Just joined up here to learn all there is to know about these lovely cars.

After seeing so many at shows and very few on the roads one day I hope to build a resto-mod esk build.

Hi Dave, can you live up to your forum handle? There's a few on here looking for engine transplants ... Loads to learn about these cars, I am very much at the start of that curve ... so ask lots of questions - someone will always (mostly) know the answer ...

Hi all,

Thanks for the warm welcome, I currently work for a motorsport company as the Lead Engine Builder so would like to think I know some bits but like mentioned every day is always a school day.
I will be looking into building my a L26L6 and learning from that process. I hope to find everything that I will need along the way and if I find anything myself will do a full build thread as I go.

As for future work for others, I shall let the build thread go up and see what happens from there, If anyone has any questions for me I will of course be more than happy to answer anything I can and if not help find the answers.

unfortunately I don't own a Z at present, but it is something I want in the future and will for sure own one at some time. I do currently own something Japanese and from 1988 but I'm sure it will be like marmite on here.

No probs, just assumed that you must have a 260z if you're going to build an L26. [emoji4]

Great that you've joined and come on here BEFORE getting a car - how can we help and advise people before they buy if we don't know them and they aint on here ?

thank you for the welcome, I must have had the privacy on the picture to myself only? does it now come up? Its been a long time since I have used forums to be honest.
If the image doesn't come up, I happen to be cursed with owning a 1988 Rx7 Fc.

And yes I want to learn which of the lovely Z's is the right one for me as well as get as much knowledge regarding the engine building side of things. There are always little bits known by the owners which no manual or experience can replace.

Key words I think and only you can decide but the criteria are :

Immediate purchase budget
Long-term budget
Resale value (if ever)
Expected use
Stock or not
Your expectations

Never knock a Mazda - saw an RX-3 racing last weekend with 4x coils and 300bhp from a 1.3litre engine - never broken down in 5yrs racing. The thing revs past 10k and you hear it coming..

For when I get one for sure it will be a long term project with no budget in mind, but like you say its the initial outlay that I will have to save/budget for to find a clean shell.

Ah I love the Rx3's, my 7 is at present 413bhp (360 at the wheels) only revs to 7.5k but is in the process of being stripped and rebuilt to rev higher and take more abuse.

The first engine I have planned (the l26) will be a restoration and left as oem spec, but hopefully the next will be a more fast road/race build; but will see how the projects go, neither of these engines are my own and I will be building them for a good friend and his son.

Lovely Mazda, DC. With your engine build knowledge I know you'll be a good addition to this forum. Lots of guys on here with lots of knowledge - soak it up - I try but sometimes it doesn't sink in ... !

As always I am here to learn and help where I can. ha yes as for the sinking in I shall be writing many documents/manuals/tutorials as I go, for myself as well as the benefit of anyone here but of course can't give away to many trade secrets haha.

Great taste, I do like that RX7 of yours! I'm also a fan of 90's Jap metal, bit of an MR2 fan myself.

Great to hear that there's an engine builder getting involved on here, I'm sure you'll be able to share your knowledge with some of the other very experienced members on here.

Hi Dave, welcome to the club! Nice RX7 - cool. You could always buy a used L26, rebuild it (you know, just to get your hand in) and drop it into a car when you get it.

Yes I think I fancy the idea of getting hold of some old engines and preparing heads/bottom ends/full builds. May sound daft but I really enjoy building engines up; helps that its my job also haha

There are books on rebuilding these engines which may be useful, other than the workshop manuals. Not sure which are the best, but you can ask others on here who have used them (I haven't), they may know of others too:
