Hi

Is anyone going to this event next weekend 1st & 2nd Sept? Was thinking of going next Sunday & taking the Zed for a run so if anyone wants to meet up....

Not sure I will find anything useful but worth a day out & never been before.

Wasn't planning on selling:conf2:

However, if someone there offered me somewhere in the region of £25k I might consider it. Otherwise it's staying with me for the foreseeable future.

Its a great day out , really need both days to do it justice , i go most years always seem to buy something i might never need . I will be along on the Sunday , alas not in the Z , they park you up miles away in the back field on grass and with the recent weather it will be muddy .

Planning to take a trip down on Saturday, just because I've not been before. Doubt I will find much in the way of bits for the 280zx, but worth a look.

So, took a trip to this event last Sunday. Really disappointed that there was no Japanese classic parts at all and very little in the way of things such as Tools, exhausts, LED bulbs etc. out of the 100s of stalls there. Most of it was rusty junk for vintage cars and British stuff which was what I was expecting I suppose.

One of the highlights though was a discussion I had with a couple of guys on the SU Carburettor stall (Burlen). Having just completed a conversion from Datsun Hitachi to British HS6 SUs, I asked if they were planning on providing ready made kits or carb sets. They said that they were still testing the market for them at the moment but had made up 6 pairs for Datsun Zeds and sold them instantly which has made them think again. They said that the sticking point was the types of bracket needed for the Throttle shaft linkage and the length of the joining bar between them. If they could get that, they would look at providing refurb kits and also refurbished Carb sets.

I said that I had all the info and I have e-mailed it to them with pics.

Given the age of the Datsun Hitachis and the difficulty in getting them refurbished as most of the parts are in the US, this is a good bolt on option to get a Zed running well if you don't want to go to the expense of Webers or Dellortos. As I said in a previous thread, rebuilding HS6 carbs are relatively easy and you can get near enough every part needed fairly quickly. Burlen even do a throttle bush and shaft replacement service if needed.

Just in case anyone is wondering, I don't work for Burlen and I am not on commission to flog their wares. I just found them very helpful and the carbs are easy to do and inexpensive compared to other options if you want to keep SU style carbs.

Agree with you there. All I managed to get was a 1983 Datsun Range brochure (for £1) and I picked up a litre of Millers Oil. After looking round for 4 hours the only Datsun/Nissan parts I came across were a red powder coated L28 Turbo rocker cover and a pair of 240z headlamp cones. I had a chat with the seller (really sorry - forgot his name), but he is a member on here. He must have been the only Jap seller. I was really surprised that there weren't at least a couple of Jap part stands. What happens to all the all the old stock from motor factors, do they Ebay it? It wasn't just Nissan/Datsun parts that were absent, but anything Japanese. If you have some obscure prewar make you would have been spoiled for choice! Worth a trip anyway just to see it, but doubt I will be going back.

I contacted Burlen about 3 years ago suggesting that if they did Datsun kits especially 2" carbs there would be a market. I said if people wanted new carbs they had to buy Webers. Guess what - they weren't interested and made me feel as if I wouldn't bother again. If I was enquiring for an E Type set-up they'd have listened I'm sure.

I have a kit comprising a pair of brand new SU HIF44 carbs (44mm/1.75 inch) manufactured by Burlen in the UK specifically for the L series, a small production run commissioned for a guy in the States who sells via Z Car Depot. Same carb as used on later model Mini Cooper and various other British cars of the 80/90s.
Not yet fitted as not decided which car they will go on so can’t comment any further about performance.

Here is a link to Burlen site with new HS6 specifically listed for the 240/260Z, says temporarily out of stock which it has said for last couple of years, if we could get enough interest maybe they would be more inclined to listen and produce another batch ?

If buying via the States - how do the Z Therapy kits compare ?

Compare with new HS6 or HIF44 ?

Problem with buying in States is the extra cost of shipping and import VAT and with ZT hassle/expense of sending carbs over for re-furb hence probably most cost effective to pay the core surcharge. Still not going to have much change from £1k all done. Woody will know exact costs ;)

HS6 kits new were £550 plus VAT retail so cheaper and easier option than ZT.

Makes the HIF44 kits look too expensive though from ZCD even with any negotiated trade or club discount.

The problem with the HIF type carbs were that the float chamber was underneath the carb body and was therefore subjected to the heat from the exhaust manifold which gave vapour lock. They were, I believe the equivalent of the Datsun flat-top carbs. I had a set of these on a Triumph Dolomite and they gave me no end of trouble so I swapped them for a pair of HS carbs. They are also really complicated to refurb especially the auto choke ones (at least that is what I found).

As I have said before, the HS6 & HS8s are still around to pick up 2nd hand and refurbishment will cost around £150 for the pair (probably £220 if you need the throttle shaft bushes replaced). There were loads around at the autojumble - probably the only useful parts I saw at the event and the average for a pair was around £100. Burlen will build them new to order (at least that's what they said) and I have now provided them with the right parts and measurements. I have suggested that they do a ready made refurb kit for used carbs with Datsun Z spec.

Ok, thanks - frequently asked the question by others and just nice to have the reliable info to hand. You might be receiving a call re Z export.;) So start thinking.

Sure and one can sell on the carbs here in Europe to offset some costs.

I'm using HIF44's with no issues at all. Just need the rest of the car to feel the same way!
