So, took a trip to this event last Sunday. Really disappointed that there was no Japanese classic parts at all and very little in the way of things such as Tools, exhausts, LED bulbs etc. out of the 100s of stalls there. Most of it was rusty junk for vintage cars and British stuff which was what I was expecting I suppose.
One of the highlights though was a discussion I had with a couple of guys on the SU Carburettor stall (Burlen). Having just completed a conversion from Datsun Hitachi to British HS6 SUs, I asked if they were planning on providing ready made kits or carb sets. They said that they were still testing the market for them at the moment but had made up 6 pairs for Datsun Zeds and sold them instantly which has made them think again. They said that the sticking point was the types of bracket needed for the Throttle shaft linkage and the length of the joining bar between them. If they could get that, they would look at providing refurb kits and also refurbished Carb sets.
I said that I had all the info and I have e-mailed it to them with pics.
Given the age of the Datsun Hitachis and the difficulty in getting them refurbished as most of the parts are in the US, this is a good bolt on option to get a Zed running well if you don't want to go to the expense of Webers or Dellortos. As I said in a previous thread, rebuilding HS6 carbs are relatively easy and you can get near enough every part needed fairly quickly. Burlen even do a throttle bush and shaft replacement service if needed.
Just in case anyone is wondering, I don't work for Burlen and I am not on commission to flog their wares. I just found them very helpful and the carbs are easy to do and inexpensive compared to other options if you want to keep SU style carbs.
