Speeduino installation

Yes that sounds a decent plan. The trigger wheel and sensor stuff is a discrete bit of work.

This thread ends here I think [emoji22]
Motorsport Electronics just told me they found some problems in their software for 6 cylinder engines that isn’t worth fixing, so they’re refunding and will be withdrawing 6 cylinder support in Nodiz.
So.... I’m wondering if there’s a good economical option to switch to a full EMS and run it ignition only for a year or two until I replace the carbs with ITB/injection.
Any suggestions? Emerald seems a good price.

Hi There - I have the same issue only on a Jag 6 cyl. Spent hours debugging (I have an electrical engineering background) & I was the one that informed the guys at Motorsport Electronics that it didn't work. They tested & confirmed but have now refunded me & won't give a timeline for fixing it. Annoying as my trigger wheel setup & wiring loom is all tailored for the Nodiz.
I have been looking at some possible ignition only ECUs that can do the job. They are more expensive than Nodiz but possibly more flexible.

I’ve made up my spark plug leads.

I cut down a spare ‘normal’ set to the right lengths and put these https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/111119087933 M4 coil plugs on.
In the end I’ve bought 8 of them, because I broke 2 fitting them. There’s obvs quite a bit of technique in putting the ends on that I don’t have. I think it would have been cheaper, easier and better if I’d asked Mr Retro-Leads to just make the lead set for me.
Is that the early omega v6 coil as I have that on my car and I just bought 2 sets omega v6 leads to make up a set to fit mine, they was about £11 a set. But I have mine mounted just in front of the inspection light using existing holes

Looks like it - wish I’d known. I spent a fair bit more on coils end plugs than that!

On my silver car I still run the HT side of the distributor and just fire the original coil from the ECU. Works really well and still looks old school. I guess you could run any ECU as you only need 1 coil driver. Just add any crank sensor, generic water temp sensor, air temp sensor, map sensor and throttle position sensor. Should be pretty cheap to do with a second hand ECU. The ECU on the silver car cost me nothing as the circuit board has most of the coil drivers burnt out.

Thread revival, not Nodiz, but Speeduino this time :)
Speeduino is similar to Megasquirt in that you tune it through Tunerstudio but it's different hardware - Arduino based.

I just bought a kit from here https://diy-efi.co.uk/
£190 and I'll have it running the ignition this year with with the trigger wheel, CAS & coil I fitted for the Nodiz, and I can add injection later.
BMW M3 ITBs are cheap ;)

From all the bmw engined cars I’ve built.... I kept a spare set just in case. However I’ve a definite carb man on the s30. I’ve a load of sensors also

My Speeduino kit arrived and I've made a start. There's a lot of soldering to do. I may be out of my depth [emoji849]

Good god ... I find these type of threads fascinating although I don't know what is going on at all - electrical stuff is certainly not my strong point. I'm kinda half hoping all the chat and info bounced around somehow rubs off on me or something ...

I roughly know what each component does, but the way the speeduino guys (or Russell for that matter) blithely know what to put with what is beyond me. I'm just painting by numbers for this bit although I hope and expect to understand the software end of it better!

That genuinely looks like loads of fun! My son and I made a 64 LED light cube the other day similar to this -
He is 8 and he really enjoys making things (obviously with help at the moment). He comes up with funky ideas and we make them together. I had to buy him a few cheap arduinos and relevant bits and pieces as things kept vanishing and showing up squished between lego blocks or on fire. He will get there!

If you do need any help and guidance, just let me know.
If you haven't done a lot of soldering before, be careful not to get too much heat into any of the chips if they have to be soldered directly. LED's only work one way round (you would be amazed how often I still make that simple mistake and spend hours wondering why it wont work!).
Take your time with it as any mistakes here and you will have a really hard time diagnosing it. A chip that has been cooked by the soldering iron is unlikely to show any visible signs.

Hi All.

I'm the owner of DIY-EFI (supplier of the speeduino kit), I just noticed some traffic coming from this site an thought I'd drop by.
Glad to see you getting on Jon, if you have any questions ask away.
If anyone else has any generic questions about Speeduino I'll be happy to help.

James

Thanks Russell, I think I've already learned to leave the iron long enough to heat up. I've only done a few resistors so far, so hopefully no risk of damage so far!
