Carb rebuild kit / what's my carb?

Hello forum,

Need some help. I've got a 240z which has an upgrade to the L28 engine, though I know little about it. I'm keen to refurb the carbs, but not sure what I need or where to get it. Any tips anyone can provide? Also, which carbs do I have. Please see the pics below.

Any help / tips gratefully received.

Thanks, Graeme

The carbs you have are the earlier 240z round too carbs. You can get service kits for them. Maybe try Mike Feeney here on the forum or maybe the us. There is a very good step by step carb set up thread on here which is worth a read.
I should think any silicone ignition lead should be fine. I use a Taylor set of leads on mine but the Ngk ones should also be fine, Luke

Apart from your carbs being old, why do you want/need to refurb them? Are they running rough or causing misfires? If so, one of the major causes is wear in the throttle shaft bushings & butterfly valves. A lot of the refurb kits don't come with bushes so you could be spending out on an expensive kit only to find the same problem. You will need to drill out the bushes if you need to replace them and that is a fiddly job and needs the right equipment. If they are working fine, I would leave them alone bar a good tune up & balancing.

If you really want nice running carbs that have been fully refurbished, ZTherapy are a good bet as they do the whole lot. AliK on this forum has had a set from them but they are expensive and you have to factor in the import & shipping costs and the cost of the core charge or returning the old ones. Having costed this recently myself, all in you are looking at over £1000.

I decided to give that a miss and went for British HS6 SU carbs. They are cheaper and you can get every part you need easily and quickly. I got all my bits from Burlen based in Salisbury & they even do new carb bodies with new throttle shaft bushes already installed or they can replace them for you. I did a thread with a write up on how to convert them from the Datsun carbs and it cost me around £250 which included buying the used carbs and the bits to refurb them. You do however need to still watch out for throttle shaft wear which is easily detectable if you can inspect before you buy.

Burlen now also do a full HS6 carb set for a Datsun 240Z which again is cheaper than ZTherapy.

With regards to the Burlen carbs I have been on the waiting list as they've been on back order for around 4 months or so. Got word today that I should have them in a couple weeks. Looking forward to seeing what they're like, my old man purchased a set for his TR4A some time ago and they look to be pretty good.

Yeah. I think I was told the same when I asked a few months back. I think there is a shortage of HS6 carb bodies. That's why I decided to look for a good set of used HS6s and rebuild them myself. As I have said, Burlen do all the separate parts and as long as the throttle shaft bushes are ok, the rest is fairly simple. Otherwise, buy some used ones and send them in and they will refurb them quicker. Sets come up on e-bay quite frequently. The closest match to a Datsun configuration is on an MGC but its getting hold of them!.

Hi Geoff
Looking for some feedback from your Burlen SU purchase back in 2018.
Was it this you purchased?
And if so, are you glad that you did?
Or anyone else that may have gone HS6

Thanks

Hi Tony,

Yes they're the ones I purchased although I am sure the price was half that when I bought them but I could be wrong. Sounds criminal I know but I have been waiting to fire the engine up, they're all fitted and look brilliant. I've had the engine running on a bench but as far as actually driving it with them on I haven't done that yet so cannot comment on that side of it. However, parts availability and support in the UK is the main reason I went for them and I cannot fault that.

Thanks Geoff
Is there anything else needed to consider/change/modify?
Did Burlen recommend fuel regulator or electric fuel pump for example?

Cheers

SU carbs do not like excess pressure. I seem remember it's 4psi they are comfortable with (you'll need to check that). The S30 mechanical fuel pump will deliver this level of pressure. If you go electric you might then need a fuel pressure regulator.

Its worth getting the Haynes SU Carburettor Manual which will probably be all you need to get along with SU Carbs
